Description

This NEO-M8N module offers exceptional sensitivity, incorporating active circuitry for its ceramic patch antenna and housed within a protective plastic case to withstand environmental elements. It delivers precise position updates at 10Hz and includes a rechargeable backup battery, facilitating quick warm starts. This module is configured at a 38400 baud rate, ensuring seamless integration with Pixhawk and APM flight controllers, though cable modification may be required for specific autopilot boards.

Representing a new generation of GPS technology, the NEO-M8N module boasts low power consumption and high precision, achieving an ultimate accuracy of approximately 0.9 meters, a significant improvement over the 1.4-1.6 meters of previous generations like the NEO-7N. It supports multi-GNSS modes including GPS/QZSS L1 C/A and GLONASS L10F. The combination of the NEO-M8N chip and ceramic antenna ensures rapid satellite locks and stable signal acquisition, complemented by a sturdy stand designed to mitigate electromagnetic interference.

This module comes pre-connected with a 5-pin connector for APM flight controllers and includes an extra 6-pin connector for Pixhawk, allowing for flexible integration. While the genuine u-blox chip permits configuration via U-Center, note that firmware updates to V3.01 are not supported due to the specific module’s flash memory size.

Key Features

  • Multi-GNSS support: GPS/QZSS L1 C/A, GLONASS L10F, BeiDou B1.
  • SBAS L1 C/A support: WAAS, EGNOS, MSAS for improved accuracy.
  • Galileo-ready E1B/C for enhanced satellite acquisition.
  • High navigation update rate of up to 18 Hz for single GNSS operation.
  • AssistNow GNSS Online, Offline (up to 35 days), and Autonomous (up to 6 days) for faster cold starts.
  • Integrated TCXO oscillator (NEO-M8N/Q) for stable timing.
  • On-chip LNA and extra LNA for lowest noise figure.
  • Active CW detection and removal anti-jamming with onboard SAW bandpass filter.
  • Data-logger functionality for position, velocity, and time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the key advantages of the NEO-M8N over older GPS modules?

The NEO-M8N offers superior position accuracy, typically around 0.9 meters, which is significantly better than the 1.4-1.6 meters of previous generations like the NEO-7N. It also supports multiple GNSS constellations simultaneously, enhancing satellite acquisition and reliability in challenging environments.

How do I connect this GPS module to my flight controller?

The module comes pre-wired with a 5-pin connector for APM flight controllers. An additional 6-pin connector is included for Pixhawk compatibility; users will need to swap the connectors to match their specific board. Ensure correct wiring for VCC, GND, TX, and RX.

Can I update the firmware or configure the NEO-M8N module?

Yes, this module features a genuine u-blox chip, allowing configuration and firmware updates via the U-Center software. However, due to flash memory size limitations, it cannot be updated to the V3.01 firmware, as that specific file is too large for the module.

What specific GNSS constellations does the NEO-M8N support?

The NEO-M8N supports GPS/QZSS L1 C/A, GLONASS L10F, and BeiDou B1 constellations. It is also Galileo-ready, further improving its ability to lock onto satellites quickly and maintain a stable, accurate position, which is crucial for drone navigation.

What is the recommended baud rate for communication with the flight controller?

This NEO-M8N module is pre-configured to operate at a baud rate of 38400. Ensure your flight controller's serial port is set to this same baud rate for proper communication and data exchange. Mismatched baud rates will prevent GPS data from being received correctly.
