Description

The CLJ-A8-2ANA operates on the inductive sensing principle, generating an electromagnetic field from its face. When a ferrous metal object enters this field within the 2mm range, it causes a change in oscillation amplitude, which is conditioned by internal circuitry to switch the NPN output transistor. This provides a reliable digital signal for position sensing, counting, or limit switching.

Constructed with a metal housing, this sensor is built for durability in industrial environments. Its fast response time and high repeat accuracy make it suitable for integration into automated assembly lines, CNC machinery, and robotic systems where precise, wear-free detection of metal components is critical.

Key Features

  • NPN Output (NO): Provides a sinking current signal (0V) when a target is detected, compatible with common PLC input modules and microcontroller circuits.
  • 2mm Standard Detection: Optimized sensing distance for small metallic parts, screws, or tool positioning.
  • M8 Threaded Barrel: Enables secure installation via a lock nut in standard M8 mounting holes.
  • Ferrous Metal Detection: Specifically tuned to sense iron and steel objects; will not trigger for aluminum, copper, or non-metals.
  • Integrated Circuit Protection: Includes reverse polarity and output short-circuit protection to prevent damage from wiring errors.
  • High-Speed Response: Enables detection in high-cycle applications such as part counting or conveyor indexing.
  • Rugged Industrial Design: Metal sensing face and housing resist mechanical impact and environmental contaminants.

Applications

  • Precision end-of-stroke detection for pneumatic cylinders in automation cells.
  • Part presence verification and counting on high-speed packaging machinery.
  • Tool position and tool breakage monitoring on CNC milling machines and lathes.
  • Limit switching and home position sensing in linear actuator and robotic arm systems.
  • Metal component detection in assembly line sorting and quality control stations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for this NPN inductive sensor?

The CLJ-A8-2ANA typically operates on a DC supply voltage ranging from 6V to 36V. It is crucial to connect the brown wire to the positive supply and the blue wire to the negative (common) to utilize the built-in reverse polarity protection. Always ensure your power source can provide sufficient current for the sensor's internal circuit and the load connected to the output.

How do I wire this NPN sensor to a PLC or microcontroller?

For an NPN (sinking) output, the black wire is the signal output. Connect the brown wire to your DC positive supply (e.g., 24V), the blue wire to DC negative (0V/GND). Connect the black output wire to your PLC digital input or microcontroller GPIO pin. The PLC/microcontroller input must be configured to source current (i.e., have a pull-up resistor to positive) because the NPN transistor will sink current to ground when active, pulling the input line low.

Can this sensor detect aluminum or non-ferrous metals?

No, the CLJ-A8-2ANA is specifically tuned for ferrous metals like iron and steel. Inductive sensors have a reduced sensing factor (Sn) for non-ferrous metals like aluminum or copper, typically requiring the target to be much closer than the rated 2mm distance. For reliable detection of non-ferrous metals, a capacitive or specialized inductive sensor with an appropriate correction factor should be selected.

What is the physical mounting procedure for the M8 threaded housing?

Insert the sensor's M8 threaded barrel through a pre-drilled 8mm hole in your mounting bracket or machine frame. Secure it from the back using the supplied M8 lock nut. Ensure the sensing face is flush with or slightly recessed from the mounting surface for optimal performance. Avoid mounting the sensor directly against or too close to other large metal masses, as this can reduce the effective sensing distance.
