Description

The LSM303D is a MEMS-based inertial measurement unit that combines a high-performance triaxial accelerometer and magnetometer on a single chip. The integrated analog-to-digital converters and signal conditioning circuitry provide stable, calibrated digital outputs via the I2C bus, simplifying system integration and reducing peripheral component count.

This breakout board provides easy access to the sensor’s pins, including voltage supply, ground, I2C data (SDA), and clock (SCL) lines. The module’s low-power operating modes make it suitable for battery-powered portable devices, while its robust digital output supports advanced motion processing algorithms for orientation, navigation, and gesture recognition applications.

Key Features

  • 6-Axis Motion Sensing: Simultaneously measures linear acceleration and magnetic field strength across three orthogonal axes.
  • Configurable I2C Address: Includes a cuttable trace to select between I2C addresses 0x1D and 0x1E for bus multiplexing.
  • Wide Dynamic Range: Accelerometer offers selectable full-scale ranges from ±2 g to ±16 g; magnetometer scales from ±2 to ±12 gauss.
  • System Protection: Integrated reverse polarity protection safeguards the module from wiring errors.
  • High-Resolution Output: 16-bit digital representation for both accelerometer and magnetometer data.
  • Low-Power Operation: Supports power-down and sleep modes to conserve energy in portable applications.
  • Compact Form Factor: Minimal 19x19mm breakout board footprint for space-constrained designs.

Applications

  • Tilt-compensated electronic compass and heading reference systems.
  • Motion-activated control and gesture recognition for gaming or VR interfaces.
  • Inertial navigation and dead reckoning for robotics and drones.
  • Vibration monitoring and impact logging in industrial condition monitoring.
  • Screen orientation detection and power management for handheld smart devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for the LSM303D breakout?

The module is designed to operate from 3.3V to 5V DC. It includes level shifting, allowing it to communicate with both 3.3V and 5V microcontrollers like Arduino Uno, Raspberry Pi, or ESP32 without requiring an external logic level converter.

How do I change the I2C address of the sensor?

The breakout includes a cuttable trace labeled ADDR. By default, the I2C address is set to 0x1D. Cutting this trace with a Sharp Microelectronics blade will change the address to 0x1E, allowing you to use two sensors on the same I2C bus.

What is the difference between the LSM303D and a 9DoF IMU?

The LSM303D is a 6DoF (Degrees of Freedom) sensor, combining a 3-axis accelerometer and a 3-axis magnetometer. It measures linear acceleration and magnetic field. A 9DoF IMU typically adds a 3-axis gyroscope to measure angular rate, which the LSM303D does not include.

Can this sensor be used for vibration analysis?

Yes, the high-resolution accelerometer within the LSM303D can be used for basic vibration monitoring. Its selectable full-scale ranges (up to ±16 g) and data output rate allow it to capture vibration signatures, though dedicated vibration sensors may offer higher bandwidth for advanced analysis.
