Description

This incremental magnetic rotary encoder utilizes a robust magnetic sensing principle and ASIC-based signal conditioning to generate precise A, B, and Z phase digital outputs. The quadrature signals allow for direction detection and high-resolution position tracking, with the Z pulse providing a reliable reference mark per revolution. The encoder’s internal design prioritizes high reliability and long operational life.

Built for industrial-grade performance, the unit features an IP54 protection rating, making it suitable for applications exposed to dust and occasional water splashes. The included shielded cable and recommendation for external pull-up resistors on all output lines enhance signal integrity in electrically noisy environments, protecting the open-collector outputs and ensuring precise logic-level readings for accurate control system feedback.

Key Features

  • High-Resolution Magnetic Sensing: 600 PPR generates 2400 counts per revolution via quadrature decoding for precise angular measurement.
  • Industrial Durability: IP54-rated enclosure and stainless steel shaft withstand demanding operational conditions.
  • Enhanced Signal Integrity: Shielded cable and included pull-up resistors combat EMI for stable, jitter-free output signals.
  • Simplified Integration: Standard 3-phase (A, B, Z) open-collector output is compatible with most PLCs, counters, and microcontroller interrupt pins.
  • Optimized Mechanical Design: Compact, lightweight form factor with standard M3 mounting holes facilitates easy installation.
  • Extended Connectivity: Pre-attached 2-meter cable with drain wire shield allows for flexible sensor placement.

Applications

  • Precision speed and position feedback for servo motors and stepper motors in CNC machinery.
  • Conveyor belt speed synchronization and direction monitoring in material handling systems.
  • Angular position sensing in robotic joints and automated rotary tables.
  • RPM measurement and control in industrial drives, pumps, and fans.
  • Manual control knob interface with high-resolution feedback for industrial HMIs and control panels.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between PPR and CPR for this encoder?

This encoder provides 600 Pulses Per Revolution (PPR) on each of its A and B channels. Because the A and B signals are in quadrature (90 degrees out of phase), a standard decoder can count 4 state changes per pulse cycle, resulting in 2400 Counts Per Revolution (CPR). The Z channel provides one index pulse per revolution for absolute reference.

How should I wire and power this encoder?

Connect the Red wire to your logic supply voltage (typically 5V or 12V, check datasheet), and the Black wire to ground. The White (A), Green (B), and Yellow (Z) wires are open-collector outputs. Each must be connected to your input pin via a pull-up resistor (4.7kΩ included) to the same logic voltage. The golden shield/drain wire should be grounded at the controller end for EMI protection.

Why are pull-up resistors necessary, and are they included?

Pull-up resistors are required because the encoder uses open-collector outputs. They pull the signal line to a defined high logic level when the encoder's internal transistor is off, ensuring clean digital signals and protecting the output stage from damage. The package includes four 4.7kΩ resistors, one for each phase (A, B, Z) and a spare.

What is the purpose of the Z (Index) phase output?

The Z phase produces a single pulse per full revolution of the shaft. It serves as an index or reference mark, allowing your system to establish an absolute zero position within each rotation. This is crucial for homing sequences, multi-turn position tracking when used with a counter, and synchronizing multiple axes.

Is this encoder suitable for wet or dusty environments?

With an IP54 protection rating, the encoder is protected against limited dust ingress and water splashes from any direction. It is suitable for most industrial floors and machinery environments but is not submersible or designed for high-pressure washdown (IP65/IP67). For harsher conditions, a higher IP-rated model should be selected.
