Frequently Asked Questions

How do I program the nRF9151-DK and which development environment is required?

The kit is programmed using the nRF Connect SDK within VS Code or the nRF Connect for Desktop toolchain. The on-board Segger Segger OB debugger is automatically recognized when connected via USB-C. You can flash pre-built samples or develop custom firmware using the Zephyr RTOS. Initial programming and AT command testing can be done through the pre-loaded Serial LTE Modem application accessible via a serial terminal.

What SIM card types are supported and how is cellular connectivity configured?

The board supports both plug-in nano-SIM (4FF) cards via the slot and soldered MFF2 eSIMs. It includes SIM cards from Onomondo and Wireless Logic with free data. For configuration, use AT commands over the VCOM UART interface (e.g., AT+CFUN, AT+COPS) to activate the network. The kit also supports Software SIM, which can reduce power consumption by eliminating physical SIM circuitry.

Can I use external antennas with the nRF9151-DK, and what connectors are provided?

Yes, the board includes SWF coaxial RF connectors for both the cellular and GNSS RF paths, allowing you to attach external antennas for range testing or improved signal reception. The integrated PCB patch antennas are active by default but can be bypassed via software configuration or hardware jumpers to route the signal to the external connectors for performance measurement.

What is the power supply requirement and typical operating current for the devkit?

The nRF9151-DK is powered via the USB-C port, which supplies 5V. The operating current varies significantly based on the cellular network state (PSM, eDRX). During active LTE-M transmission, peak currents can reach several hundred milliamps, while deep sleep modes with Software SIM can draw microamps. For accurate power profiling, use the onboard current measurement circuitry accessible via the provided pins.
