The MQ-5 gas sensor module utilizes a tin oxide (SnO2) semiconductor as its sensing element. In clean air, the conductivity of SnO2 is low. When combustible target gases are present, the sensor’s conductivity increases proportionally with the gas concentration. A simple external circuit converts this change in conductivity into a corresponding analog voltage or digital trigger output.
This module is engineered for stability and long-term operation within an ambient temperature range of -20°C to 40°C. It features a dedicated potentiometer for calibrating the detection threshold of its digital output, allowing adaptation to different environmental conditions and sensitivity requirements. The design prioritizes detection of LPG, methane, and propane while minimizing cross-sensitivity to common interferents like alcohol and cooking fumes.
