Description

This Mini OSD module integrates an ATmega328P microcontroller and a MAX7456 OSD chip to provide a dedicated telemetry overlay solution for APM-based autopilots. It parses the MAVLink data stream from the flight controller, superimposing critical flight parameters like battery voltage, GPS coordinates, altitude, and flight mode directly onto the pilot’s FPV video feed. The board’s compact 58x22mm footprint makes it suitable for integration into tight builds.

Electrical design features two isolated power domains: a +5V digital section for the microcontroller and a regulated +5V analog section for the video stage, which can accept inputs up to +12V. This separation minimizes noise and ensures a stable, clear OSD overlay. Solder jumpers allow configuration for PAL video standard and optional power domain combination. The module is programmed via a standard 6-pin FTDI cable, facilitating custom character sets or firmware modifications.

Key Features

  • ATmega328P 8-bit AVR microcontroller pre-loaded with Arduino bootloader.
  • MAX7456 single-channel, monochrome on-screen display processor.
  • Dual isolated power rails with LED indicators for digital (MCU) and analog (video) stages.
  • Configurable solder jumpers for PAL video standard and power rail combination.
  • FTDI-compatible 6-pin serial programming header for firmware updates.
  • Exposed test points for HSYNC and LOS (Loss of Signal) diagnostics.
  • Standard 6-pin ISP header (unpopulated) for advanced programming.
  • Compact PCB design (58x22x12mm) optimized for space-constrained APM builds.

Applications

  • FPV telemetry overlay for APM 2.6/2.8-based multirotor drones and fixed-wing aircraft.
  • MAVLink data visualization for ArduPilot-powered UAVs in First Person View (FPV) racing or mapping missions.
  • Ground station-free flight monitoring for DIY drone builds requiring compact OSD solutions.
  • Educational and development platform for custom OSD character sets and MAVLink parameter display.

Frequently Asked Questions

What flight controllers is this Mini OSD compatible with?

This Mini OSD is specifically designed for the ArduPilot Mega (APM) series, including APM 2, APM 2.5, APM 2.6, and APM 2.8 flight controllers. It connects via the telemetry port and reads the MAVLink data stream. It is not natively compatible with Pixhawk, Betaflight, or iNAV flight controllers without significant protocol translation.

How do I program or update the firmware on this OSD module?

The module is programmed using a standard FTDI-compatible USB-to-serial adapter connected to the 6-pin header. The ATmega328P comes with an Arduino bootloader, allowing you to upload custom sketches using the Arduino IDE. You can modify the OSD character set or change the displayed telemetry parameters through this interface.

What is the purpose of the dual independent power sections?

The two power sections isolate the digital circuitry (ATmega328P) from the analog video stage (MAX7456). This design prevents electrical noise from the microcontroller from interfering with the clean video signal, ensuring a stable and flicker-free OSD overlay. Solder jumpers are provided to combine these sections if a single power source is preferred.

What video input voltage does this OSD module accept?

The analog video stage includes a regulator that can accept input voltages up to +12V via the video input header. The digital section is powered by a separate +5V rail, which can be supplied from the FTDI programming cable or another +5V source on your aircraft. The total board current draw is up to 500mA.
