Description

The LJ24A3-10-Z/AY operates on the inductive sensing principle, generating an electromagnetic field from its coil. When a metallic object enters this field, eddy currents are induced, causing a change in oscillation amplitude that is detected by the internal circuit, triggering the solid-state PNP output switch. This non-contact method ensures high reliability and eliminates mechanical wear.

Featuring a brass-nickel plated housing and an IP65 protection rating, the sensor is resistant to dust, oil, and water jets, making it suitable for machine tools, packaging lines, and material handling systems. The integrated reverse connection protection safeguards the electronics from wiring errors, enhancing installation safety and longevity.

Key Features

  • Precision Inductive Sensing: Detects ferrous and non-ferrous metal targets with a repeatability of ±10% at the nominal 10mm sensing distance.
  • Industrial-Grade Construction: Brass-nickel plated M12 threaded barrel provides excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical strength.
  • High-Current Output: PNP open-collector output can sink up to 300mA, enabling direct control of indicators, relays, or PLC inputs.
  • Wide Voltage Compatibility: Stable operation from 6 to 36VDC, supporting both 12V and 24V industrial control systems.
  • Environmental Durability: IP65 rating ensures reliable performance in environments with dust, chips, and coolants.
  • Integrated Safeguards: Built-in reverse polarity and short-circuit protection for enhanced circuit safety.

Applications

  • Position verification and end-of-travel detection on CNC machines and automated lathes.
  • Object presence sensing in conveyor systems, sorting machines, and packaging lines.
  • Metal part counting and inventory management in manufacturing and assembly cells.
  • Safety interlock and door position monitoring on industrial cabinets and machinery guards.
  • Proximity switching in automotive assembly, robotic arm tooling, and material handling equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between PNP and NPN output on this sensor?

This LJ24A3 model features a PNP (sourcing) output in a Normally Closed (NC) configuration. In its resting state (no target present), the output signal wire is internally connected to the positive supply voltage (+V). When a metal target is detected within the 10mm range, the output switches to a high-impedance (open) state. This is the opposite logic of a Normally Open (NO) sensor and is used for fail-safe applications where a broken wire or loss of power should trigger an alarm.

What types of metal can this sensor detect?

As a standard inductive proximity sensor, it detects both ferrous (iron, steel) and non-ferrous metals (aluminum, copper, brass). However, the effective sensing distance can vary significantly between materials. The nominal 10mm distance is typically specified for mild steel (Fe360). For non-ferrous metals like aluminum or copper, the sensing distance is reduced, often by 30-60%, due to lower permeability and conductivity. Always refer to the sensor's reduction factor for specific materials during system design.

How do I wire this PNP NC sensor to a PLC input?

Connect the sensor's brown wire to your DC positive supply (6-36VDC), and the blue wire to the DC common (0V). The black wire is the switched PNP output. For a sinking PLC input (common to +V), connect the black sensor output directly to the PLC input terminal. The PLC input's common should be connected to +V. When no target is present, the black wire will be at +V, supplying current to the PLC input, which will read as 'ON'. When a target is detected, the output opens, current stops, and the PLC input reads 'OFF'.

Is this sensor suitable for use in wet or oily environments?

Yes, the IP65 rating indicates it is dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction. This makes it suitable for most industrial environments where exposure to coolants, oils, or occasional washdowns occurs. However, IP65 is not suitable for continuous immersion or high-pressure, high-temperature washdowns. Ensure the cable gland is properly secured and the sensing face is kept clean of thick debris or metallic swarf buildup for reliable operation.
