The GY-53 module integrates STMicroelectronics’ VL53L0X, a laser-based Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor that measures absolute distance by calculating the time for emitted infrared light to reflect off a target and return. This patented FlightSenseâ„¢ technology provides precise measurements independent of target color, reflectance, or ambient light interference, unlike traditional IR reflectance sensors. The module includes an onboard low-dropout regulator and level-shifting circuitry, enabling direct connection to 3-5V DC supplies and safe interfacing with both 5V and 3.3V logic microcontrollers.
Designed for low-power embedded applications, the sensor supports user-defined ranging intervals and multiple interrupt schemes to minimize host processor load. The PCB features a perforated section, allowing the VL53L0X satellite board to be separated for integration into space-constrained 2.8V systems. The module outputs distance data via a configurable serial port or a pulse-width modulation (PWM) signal, providing flexibility for robotics, gesture recognition, and industrial proximity sensing applications.
