Description

The MPU6500 motion sensor module is built around the MPU-9250 multi-chip module, which integrates a 3-axis MEMS accelerometer and a 3-axis MEMS gyroscope into a single package. The integrated Digital Motion Processor (DMP) offloads complex sensor fusion algorithms from the host microcontroller, enabling efficient computation of orientation, gesture recognition, and motion tracking. The module features configurable full-scale ranges for both sensors, allowing optimization for high-precision or high-dynamic-range applications.

Designed for reliable operation in electrically noisy environments, the module includes onboard low-pass filters to mitigate interference from motors and high-current circuits. An immersion gold PCB and machine welding ensure consistent signal integrity and mechanical durability. The built-in logic level converter and configurable I2C address (0x68 or 0x69 via AD0 pin) simplify integration into both 3.3V and 5V logic systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the MPU6500 and MPU9250?

The MPU6500 module uses the MPU-9250 multi-chip module (MCM) which contains the accelerometer and gyroscope dies. However, this specific MPU6500 module version does not include the separate AK8963 magnetometer IC on the PCB, making it a 6-axis sensor (accelerometer + gyroscope) rather than a 9-axis sensor. The core motion processing and electrical interfaces remain identical to the full MPU-9250.

How do I select between 3.3V and 5V power supply for this module?

The module includes an onboard 3.3V LDO regulator. To power it with 5V, connect your 5V supply to the VCC pin; the regulator will step it down. To power it directly with 3.3V, you must bridge the solder Jumper located next to the regulator to bypass it, then apply 3.3V to the VCC pin. Failure to bridge the Jumper when using 3.3V may result in insufficient voltage.

How do I change the I2C address from the default 0x68?

The default I2C address is 0x68. You can change it to 0x69 by pulling the AD0 pin high (connecting it to VCC). The module includes a pull-down resistor on AD0, so you must actively drive it high to change the address. This allows you to connect two of these sensors on the same I2C bus.

Does this module support SPI communication as well as I2C?

Yes, the MPU6500 chip natively supports both I2C and SPI serial interfaces. The module breaks out the nCS (chip select) pin for SPI mode. To use SPI, configure your microcontroller for SPI communication and use the nCS pin to select the device. The I2C pull-up resistors are onboard but typically do not interfere with SPI operation.

What is the purpose of the Digital Motion Processor (DMP)?

The integrated DMP is a dedicated processor that runs complex motion fusion algorithms onboard the sensor. It can compute quaternions, perform gesture recognition, and generate fused motion data, significantly reducing the computational load on the host microcontroller. This enables smoother and more responsive motion tracking in applications like drones, robotics, and wearable devices.
