Description

The DFRobot MP2636 module is built around the Monolithic Power Systems MP2636 IC, a highly integrated switch-mode solution that combines battery charging and power boosting into a single circuit. This eliminates the need for separate charger and boost converter designs, simplifying system architecture for portable electronics. The module operates at a 600kHz switching frequency for efficient power conversion.

It features automatic power path management: when an external 4.5-6V supply is connected to VIN, the module charges the connected battery at up to 2.5A while simultaneously powering the load. When external power is removed, it seamlessly switches to boost mode, drawing from the battery to provide a stable 5V output. This behavior mimics a commercial power bank, making it ideal for DIY portable power solutions, robotics, and backup power systems.

Key Features

  • Integrated switch-mode charger and boost converter based on MPS MP2636 IC.
  • High-efficiency power path management for uninterrupted system operation.
  • Supports high charge and discharge currents up to 2.5A for fast charging and robust load support.
  • Includes battery overcharge, over-discharge, and short-circuit protection.
  • Visual charge status indicator via onboard LED.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the input voltage range for charging a battery with this module?

The charging circuit accepts a DC input voltage between 4.5V and 6.0V on the VIN pin. A standard 5V USB or wall adapter is typically used. Exceeding 6.0V may damage the module.

What voltage and current does the boost converter output?

When operating from battery power, the module's boost converter provides a regulated 5V DC output at the VOUT pin. The maximum continuous output current is 2.5A, suitable for powering microcontrollers, sensors, and small peripherals.

What type of battery is compatible with the MP2636 module?

This module is designed for single-cell Lithium-ion or Lithium-Polymer batteries with a nominal voltage of 3.7V and a full charge voltage of 4.2V. It is not suitable for multi-cell packs, NiMH, or lead-acid batteries.

How does the module manage power between the external input and the battery?

The module features automatic power path management. When external power is present at VIN, it charges the battery and powers the 5V output simultaneously. If external power is disconnected, it instantly switches to boost mode, using the battery to maintain the 5V output without interruption.
