Description

The Bosch BME280 is a MEMS-based environmental sensor integrating precise capacitive sensing for humidity, piezoresistive sensing for pressure, and a bandgap sensor for temperature. Its advanced signal conditioning and digital filtering provide calibrated, ready-to-use data with high resolution and minimal noise.

Designed for harsh environments, it operates from -40°C to +85°C with excellent long-term stability. The sensor’s fast response time (1 second for humidity) supports dynamic applications, while its ultra-low power profile makes it ideal for battery-powered IoT nodes, weather stations, and indoor navigation systems.

Key Features

  • Integrated triple-sensing of pressure, humidity, and temperature in a single chip
  • Ultra-low current consumption: 1.8 μA to 3.6 μA at 1 Hz sampling (all sensors active)
  • Wide operating ranges: pressure 300–1100 hPa, temperature -40°C to +85°C
  • Dual digital interfaces: I²C (up to 3.4 MHz) and SPI (up to 10 MHz) for maximum flexibility
  • High accuracy and linearity across the full measurement range
  • Excellent long-term stability and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC robustness)
  • Compact, halogen-free, and RoHS-compliant 8-pin LGA package
  • Separate supply voltages: VDD (1.71V to 3.6V) for core and VDDIO (1.2V to 3.6V) for I/O

Applications

  • Indoor/outdoor weather stations and environmental monitoring systems
  • Altitude tracking and barometric navigation for drones and wearable devices
  • HVAC and building automation for climate control and air quality assessment
  • IoT sensor nodes and smart home devices requiring low-power environmental sensing
  • Mobile phones, tablets, and wearables for context-aware applications

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between VDD and VDDIO supply voltages on the BME280?

VDD (1.71V to 3.6V) powers the sensor core and analog circuitry. VDDIO (1.2V to 3.6V) powers the digital I/O pins for the I2C or SPI interface, allowing level-shifting to match your microcontroller's logic voltage. Both supplies must be within their specified ranges for proper operation.

How do I select between I2C and SPI communication interface?

The interface is selected by the state of the CSB (Chip Select Bar) pin. Pulling CSB high (to VDDIO) enables the I2C interface. Pulling CSB low enables the SPI interface. The SDO pin then acts as the SPI data output. Ensure your PCB layout accommodates the chosen mode.

What is the typical accuracy and response time of the BME280 sensor?

The sensor provides high relative accuracy: ±1 hPa for pressure (absolute accuracy depends on calibration), ±3% RH for humidity, and ±1.0°C for temperature. The humidity sensor has a fast response time of 1 second. For highest precision, perform a one-point calibration in your application environment.

Can the BME280 operate at 5V logic levels?

No. The maximum supply voltage (VDD) is 3.6V and the maximum I/O voltage (VDDIO) is 3.6V. Connecting the sensor to 5V logic will damage it. For use with 5V microcontrollers like classic Arduino, you must use a logic level converter on the I2C/SPI lines and regulate the VDD/VDDIO supplies to 3.3V.
