Description

If your project involves monitoring fleets, conducting high-altitude scientific experiments, or any application requiring precise device localization, the Arduino MKR GPS Shield delivers essential functionality as a plug-and-play solution. This shield is built around the u-blox SAM-M8Q GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) module, ensuring reliable and accurate positioning data. While primarily designed for use with Arduino MKR format boards, its versatile Eslov connector also enables connection to other compatible boards via a dedicated cable.

The module interfaces with official Arduino boards through either a serial connection, ideal when stacked directly onto an MKR board, or an I2C interface when using an Eslov cable, often supplied as part of a bundle. This dual communication capability ensures broad compatibility and simplifies integration into diverse embedded systems.

The GPS module supports configuration via special commands, and an onboard battery holder (for CR1216) ensures these settings are retained even after power cycles. This is particularly useful for specialized scenarios, such as configuring the GPS for 1g operation in high-altitude experiments or enabling specific satellite constellations like Galileo, which may be disabled by default. The persistent configuration capability streamlines deployment in demanding environments.
