Description

The Adafruit SHT45 Trinkey combines Sensirion’s fourth-generation SHT45 digital humidity and temperature sensor with a powerful ATSAMD21 microcontroller on a keychain-sized USB-A form factor. The SHT45 utilizes a CMOSens® chip for fully calibrated, linearized digital output via I2C, offering excellent long-term stability and low power consumption. A dedicated thermal-isolation cutout around the sensor minimizes self-heating effects from the board.

The onboard ATSAMD21E18 handles sensor polling, data formatting, and USB communication, presenting the device as a serial COM port. Out of the box, it streams real-time sensor readings in CSV format, making it instantly usable with terminal software, data loggers, or custom Python/Arduino scripts. The module is fully functional in condensing environments and includes a power heater for sensor recovery.

Key Features

  • High-Accuracy Sensing: Sensirion SHT45 sensor delivers ±0.1°C temperature and ±1.0% RH humidity accuracy with NIST-traceable, ISO 17025 calibration.
  • Integrated MCU Platform: Features an ATSAMD21E18 32-bit Cortex M0+ processor running at 48 MHz with 256KB Flash and 32KB RAM.
  • Plug-and-Play USB Interface: Native USB CDC ACM support ensures driverless operation across all major operating systems for easy serial data acquisition.
  • Durable & Condensation-Resistant Design: PTFE membrane and board design allow reliable operation in high-humidity and condensing environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for the SHT45 Trinkey?

The SHT45 Trinkey is powered directly from the USB port, accepting the standard USB voltage range of 4.5V to 5.25V. The onboard regulator provides stable 3.3V power to the ATSAMD21 microcontroller and the SHT45 sensor. Do not apply external voltage directly to the board's pins.

How do I read data from the SHT45 Trinkey?

Out of the box, the Trinkey acts as a USB Serial (CDC ACM) device. Plug it into a USB-A port and open a terminal program (e.g., Arduino Serial Monitor, PuTTY, screen) at 115200 baud. It will continuously stream CSV-formatted lines containing temperature (°C), humidity (%RH), and touch sensor status. You can also reprogram it using Arduino IDE or CircuitPython to customize the data output.

Is the SHT45 sensor calibrated, and what is its accuracy?

Yes, the Sensirion SHT45 is factory-calibrated and provides NIST-traceable calibration data. It offers high accuracy of ±0.1°C for temperature and ±1.0% RH for relative humidity across its specified operating range. The sensor includes a power heater for recovery from condensation, ensuring reliable performance in high-humidity environments.

Can I program the Trinkey with the Arduino IDE?

Yes. The board is fully compatible with the Arduino IDE. You must install the Adafruit SAMD Boards core and the necessary libraries (Adafruit SHT4x, Adafruit NeoPixel, Adafruit FreeTouch). Once configured, you can upload custom sketches to read the sensor, control the NeoPixel, and use the capacitive touchpad, leveraging the full capabilities of the ATSAMD21E18 microcontroller.

What is the purpose of the capacitive touchpad and NeoPixel LED?

The capacitive touchpad provides a user-input interface without mechanical buttons, usable for triggering events or changing modes in your code. The RGB NeoPixel LED offers visual feedback for status, sensor readings, or program state. Both are programmable via Arduino or CircuitPython, adding interactivity to your environmental monitoring projects.
