Description

The HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor module uses sonar principles to measure distance to objects. A trigger pulse initiates a 40 kHz ultrasonic burst; the time for the echo to return is measured and output as a pulse width on the Echo pin, proportional to the distance. This time-of-flight method provides stable and accurate readings unaffected by ambient light or color, though acoustically soft materials may be harder to detect.

Designed for easy integration, the module features a standard 4-pin interface (VCC, Trig, Echo, GND) compatible with 5V logic microcontrollers like Arduino and ESP32. Its compact construction and low power consumption make it suitable for mobile robotics, level sensing, and proximity detection applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for the HC-SR04 sensor?

The HC-SR04 module requires a stable 5V DC power supply. The trigger input and echo output signals are also at 5V TTL logic levels, making it directly compatible with most 5V microcontrollers like Arduino Uno. Do not exceed 5.5V on the VCC pin.

How do I interface the HC-SR04 with an Arduino or microcontroller?

Connect VCC to 5V, GND to ground. Connect a digital output pin to the Trig pin to send a 10µs high pulse to initiate measurement. Connect the Echo pin to a digital input pin to read the high pulse duration, which corresponds to the distance (time = distance * 58). Libraries are available to simplify timing.

What materials can the HC-SR04 sensor detect accurately?

The sensor works best with solid, acoustically reflective surfaces. Hard materials like wood, plastic, and metal are detected reliably. Soft, porous, or angled surfaces (like cloth or foam) can absorb or scatter the sound waves, reducing range or causing missed detections. It is not affected by color or ambient light.

What is the minimum and maximum reliable detection distance?

The specified reliable measuring range is 2 cm to 400 cm. Objects closer than 2 cm may not be detected due to the sensor's blind zone. Under ideal conditions, echoes can be received up to 450 cm, but accuracy and stability decrease near the maximum limit. The 15° beam angle also affects detection at longer ranges.
