Description

The LTR-390UV module incorporates a monolithic CMOS sensor that simultaneously measures ultraviolet (UVA) and ambient visible light. It utilizes a photodiode array with optical filters to provide separate digital readings for UV index and illuminance (lux), enabling precise environmental light analysis. The sensor’s on-chip analog-to-digital converter and programmable gain settings allow for optimized performance across a wide dynamic range.

Communication is handled via a standard I2C bus, supporting both standard (100kHz) and fast (400kHz) modes. The module includes reverse polarity protection on its supply lines and operates from a single 3.3V to 5V DC supply, drawing minimal quiescent current. Its integrated interrupt engine can be configured to trigger on specific light threshold crossings, reducing microcontroller polling overhead for power-sensitive applications.

Key Features

  • Monolithic dual-spectrum ALS (Ambient Light Sensor) and UVS (UV Sensor).
  • High-precision digital output with user-selectable 13, 16, 18, or 20-bit resolution.
  • I2C digital interface with 7-bit device address and configurable data rate.
  • Programmable interrupt output with adjustable hysteresis for stable threshold detection.
  • Wide operating voltage range (3.3V to 5V DC) with reverse polarity protection.
  • Low operating current (~2.73 mA typical) for battery-powered designs.
  • Compact PCB footprint (24mm x 9mm) with standard 2.54mm pitch pin headers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for the LTR-390UV module?

The module operates from 3.3V to 5V DC. It includes reverse polarity protection on the VCC and GND pins, making it safe for use with most microcontroller development boards like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and ESP32 without requiring an external level shifter.

How do I communicate with the sensor and what is the I2C address?

Communication is via the I2C serial interface, supporting both standard-mode (100kHz) and fast-mode (400kHz). The default 7-bit I2C slave address is 0x53. The SDA and SCL lines are 3.3V logic level but are tolerant of 5V systems when powered within specification.

Can this sensor measure both UV Index and ambient light (lux) simultaneously?

Yes. The LTR-390UV contains two independent sensing channels. One is optimized for UVA light (280-430nm) for calculating UV Index, and the other covers the visible spectrum (450-700nm) for ambient light and lux measurements. The sensor can be configured to output data from either channel.

What is the purpose of the programmable interrupt function?

The integrated interrupt engine allows you to set upper and lower threshold values for light intensity. The sensor continuously compares readings to these thresholds and triggers an interrupt pin, alerting the host microcontroller only when a significant change occurs. This greatly reduces system power consumption and processing overhead.
