Description

The sensor utilizes a MEMS piezoresistive sensing element (MPX5700AP) to convert applied pressure into a proportional analog signal, which is then digitized by an onboard ADC for precise I2C communication. Its epoxy-encapsulated design ensures stable performance and resistance to environmental contaminants.

Operating from 0 to 85°C, this module is engineered for integration into pneumatic control systems, laboratory setups, and DIY electronics projects requiring reliable pressure monitoring. The Gravity-series connector simplifies wiring with Arduino and other development boards.

Key Features

  • High-accuracy piezoresistive pressure transducer with a broad 15-700 kPa range.
  • Integrated 16-bit ADC provides digital I2C output, minimizing noise susceptibility.
  • Wide 3.3V to 5.5V supply compatibility for seamless use with 5V Arduino and 3.3V Raspberry Pi/ESP32.
  • Excellent linear output and temperature compensation for stable readings across 0–85°C.
  • Epoxy resin integral construction protects the sensing element from moisture and mechanical stress.
  • Built-in reverse polarity protection safeguards the module during installation.
  • Low power dissipation (0.06W) suitable for battery-powered monitoring applications.
  • Gravity-standard 3-pin interface (GND, VCC, SDA, SCL) for plug-and-play connectivity.

Applications

  • Pneumatic system pressure monitoring and control in industrial automation.
  • Air pressure measurement in HVAC ducts and ventilation systems.
  • Altitude estimation and barometric pressure tracking for weather stations.
  • Fluid pressure monitoring in laboratory experiments and educational setups.
  • Leak detection and system integrity testing in compressed air pipelines.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the output interface and how do I connect it to an Arduino?

This module provides a digital I2C output. Connect the 4-pin Gravity connector: VCC to 5V or 3.3V (depending on your logic level), GND to ground, SDA to the Arduino's SDA pin (A4 on Uno), and SCL to the SCL pin (A5 on Uno). Use the DFRobot Gravity I2C library for easy data reading.

Can this sensor measure both positive and negative (vacuum) pressure?

No. The MPX5700AP is an absolute pressure sensor designed for measuring positive gauge pressure relative to a vacuum reference. Its range is 15 to 700 kPa absolute pressure, which corresponds to positive pressures above a vacuum. It is not suitable for measuring negative gauge pressure (vacuum) below atmospheric pressure.

What is the accuracy and how can I calibrate the sensor?

The sensor has a maximum error of ±2.5% across its operating range. For higher precision, you can perform a 2-point calibration using known pressure references. The provided DFRobot library includes calibration functions where you input the raw sensor reading at a known low pressure and a known high pressure to calculate a corrected linear output.

Is this sensor suitable for outdoor or harsh environments?

The epoxy-sealed sensing element provides good protection against humidity and dust. However, the module's PCB is not conformally coated. For prolonged outdoor or harsh industrial use, additional environmental sealing of the electronics is recommended. The operating temperature range is 0 to 85°C.
