Description

This sensor operates on the 5.8GHz ISM band, utilizing Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) and Continuous Wave (CW) modulation to detect Doppler shift caused by moving objects. Unlike PIR sensors, it can detect extremely subtle motions through materials, making it effective for presence detection even when a person is stationary.

The module features advanced signal processing for high sensitivity and strong immunity to ambient light, temperature fluctuations, and common RF interference. Its compact form factor and simple 3-pin interface (VCC, GND, OUT/TX) facilitate easy integration into lighting control systems, security devices, and smart home automation platforms.

Key Features

  • High-frequency 5.8GHz radar core for precise motion and presence sensing.
  • Superior sensitivity capable of detecting sub-centimeter movements like chest motion from breathing.
  • Engineered with strong anti-interference characteristics against environmental noise.
  • Wide 120° x 120° detection beam angle for broad area coverage.
  • Robust operating temperature range from -40°C to +85°C for indoor and outdoor applications.
  • Compact and shielded design for easy integration into end products.
  • Configurable via UART commands for adjustable sensitivity and output mode.
  • Optimized performance-to-cost ratio for volume deployments.

Applications

  • Smart lighting and energy management systems for presence-based control.
  • Intrusion detection and security systems for perimeter monitoring.
  • Occupancy sensing in smart buildings, hotels, and office spaces.
  • Automated appliance control in smart homes (e.g., TVs, fans).
  • Traffic monitoring and vehicle detection in parking garages.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between this microwave radar sensor and a standard PIR sensor?

This 5.8GHz radar sensor detects motion based on Doppler shift of reflected radio waves, allowing it to sense extremely subtle movements like breathing through materials. PIR sensors only detect changes in infrared radiation from large body heat movements. The radar is also unaffected by ambient temperature and light conditions.

How do I interface this sensor with an Arduino or ESP32?

You can use the digital I/O pin for a simple motion/no-motion signal, or connect the TX pin to a microcontroller UART RX pin for serial data output. The module operates at 5V logic and 115200 baud. Ensure your power supply provides a stable 4.5-5.5V DC.

Can this sensor detect motion through walls or glass?

Microwave signals can penetrate non-metallic materials like drywall, plastic, and glass to a degree, but detection range and sensitivity will be reduced. It is primarily designed for line-of-sight or through-material applications like inside enclosures. Metallic surfaces will block the signal entirely.

What is the effective detection range and coverage area?

The maximum detection range is up to 11 meters under ideal conditions. The sensor has a wide beam angle of 120° x 120°, creating a broad conical detection zone suitable for room occupancy sensing.

Is the sensor's sensitivity configurable?

Yes, sensitivity and other parameters like hold time can be configured by sending specific command sets via the UART interface. The datasheet or product wiki provides the command protocol for advanced tuning of the detection threshold.
