Description

This CO2 sensor utilizes mature NDIR technology, which measures the absorption of specific infrared wavelengths by carbon dioxide molecules. This method provides excellent selectivity, avoiding cross-sensitivity to other gases, and ensures long-term stability with an operational lifespan of up to 5 years. The integrated precision optical path and sophisticated signal conditioning circuit deliver reliable ppm readings.

The module operates within an industrial temperature range of -10°C to 50°C and up to 95% relative humidity (non-condensing). It features a fast preheat time of approximately one minute and a T90 response time under 120 seconds. The PWM output provides a duty cycle directly proportional to the CO2 concentration, simplifying data acquisition without complex analog-to-digital conversion.

Key Features

  • High-precision NDIR sensing core for accurate CO2 measurement.
  • Stable PWM output with excellent linearity across the full 400–5000 ppm range.
  • Built-in temperature compensation algorithm for consistent performance across operating conditions.
  • Designed for long service life with no sensor poisoning or degradation from water vapor.
  • Gravity-series connector for plug-and-play compatibility with DFRobot shields and Arduino.
  • Compact form factor (69mm x 37mm) for easy integration into portable or fixed installations.
  • Low power consumption design suitable for battery-powered monitoring applications.
  • High-value build offering professional-grade sensing performance for prototyping and end products.

Applications

  • Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) monitoring and HVAC system control in offices, schools, and smart homes.
  • Greenhouse and agricultural environment control for optimizing plant growth conditions.
  • Demand-Controlled Ventilation (DCV) systems in commercial buildings for energy efficiency.
  • Portable CO2 data loggers for environmental science and workplace safety assessments.
  • Integration into IoT sensor nodes for real-time air quality dashboards and alerts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the output signal of this CO2 sensor and how do I read it?

The sensor provides a PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) output. The duty cycle of the signal is proportional to the CO2 concentration. You can read it using the `pulseIn()` function on an Arduino or any microcontroller GPIO pin capable of measuring pulse width. The specific conversion formula from duty cycle to ppm is provided in the sensor's datasheet.

What is the required power supply and are there any peak current considerations?

The module requires a stable 5.0V ± 0.1V DC power supply. While the average current draw is 40mA, there are periodic peaks up to 125mA during the sensor's internal measurement cycle. It is recommended to use a power supply or regulator capable of delivering at least 150mA to ensure stable operation.

Does this sensor require calibration, and what is its preheat time?

The sensor is factory calibrated and typically does not require user calibration for general use. It features a preheat time of approximately one minute after power-on to stabilize its internal infrared source and optics before providing accurate readings. The T90 response time to a step change in concentration is under 120 seconds.

Can this sensor be used outdoors or in high-humidity environments?

The sensor is rated for operation in 0–95% relative humidity (non-condensing). It is designed with anti-water vapor interference, making it suitable for indoor environments like greenhouses or basements. For prolonged outdoor use, it must be housed in a protective enclosure that prevents direct water ingress and condensation, as it is not officially IP-rated for waterproofing.
