Description

The Air Quality 4 Click board integrates Sensirion’s advanced SGP30 sensor, which employs multiple metal-oxide sensing elements and a temperature-controlled micro-hotplate. Utilizing proprietary CMOSens® and MOXSens® technologies, the sensor delivers robust performance resistant to degradation from siloxanes and other airborne contaminants, ensuring reliable long-term measurements.

The board outputs fully compensated TVOC and CO₂ equivalent values via I2C, alongside raw signals for hydrogen and ethanol. A dynamic baseline compensation algorithm allows for accurate readings, with baseline storage capability for system restarts. The board includes essential support circuitry: a voltage level shifter for seamless I2C communication across logic levels and an LDO regulator for stable power.

Key Features

  • High-precision SGP30 sensor from Sensirion with MOXSens® Technology for exceptional long-term stability and accuracy.
  • Dual compensated outputs for indoor air quality: TVOC concentration (0–60,000 ppb) and CO₂ equivalent signal (400–60,000 ppm).
  • Integrated Texas Instruments PCA9306 I2C bus level shifter for reliable communication between 3.3V and 5V systems.
  • On-board EXAR SPX3819M5 500mA LDO regulator accepts 3.3V to 5V DC input, simplifying power supply design.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the power supply requirement for the Air Quality 4 Click board?

The board is designed for a wide input voltage range of 3.3V to 5V DC, thanks to its integrated EXAR SPX3819M5 low-dropout voltage regulator. You can power it directly from the 3.3V or 5V rails of your microcontroller development board via the mikroBUS socket. Ensure your power source can provide sufficient current for the sensor's micro-hotplate during operation.

How do I communicate with the SGP30 sensor on this Click board?

Communication is exclusively via the I2C interface. The board includes a Texas Instruments PCA9306 level shifter, making it compatible with both 3.3V and 5V I2C host systems. You will need to use the official Sensirion SGP30 library or implement the I2C command set to request TVOC, CO₂ equivalent, and raw gas readings from the sensor's specific I2C address.

What do the 'TVOC' and 'CO₂eq' outputs represent?

TVOC (Total Volatile Organic Compounds) is a calibrated concentration of a wide range of organic vapors, reported in parts per billion (ppb). The CO₂ equivalent (CO₂eq) signal is a calculated value derived from the TVOC reading, representing an estimated carbon dioxide concentration in parts per million (ppm) that would cause a similar radiative forcing effect. It is useful for indoor air quality assessment relative to outdoor air.

Does the sensor require a burn-in or calibration period?

Yes, for optimal accuracy, the SGP30 requires an initial operational period. Upon first power-up or after a prolonged storage period (more than 7 days), the sensor should be operated for 12 hours under clean air conditions to stabilize. Furthermore, the sensor executes a dynamic baseline compensation algorithm, and it is recommended to read and store the baseline values periodically to restore them after a power cycle for consistent readings.
