Description

The ADXL345 is a high-performance, low-power, 3-axis accelerometer featuring a polysilicon surface-micromachined sensor and signal conditioning circuitry. It measures static acceleration due to gravity for tilt-sensing applications, as well as dynamic acceleration from motion, shock, or vibration. The sensor outputs are digitized with a 13-bit resolution and accessible via a standard I2C or SPI serial interface.

Designed for low-voltage operation (2.0V to 3.6V), this module is ideal for battery-powered portable electronics, robotics, and IoT devices. Its integrated 32-level FIFO buffer helps manage data flow and reduces host processor overhead. The robust MEMS construction ensures reliable performance for orientation, activity, and impact detection in DIY and professional prototyping environments.

Key Features

  • High-resolution 3-axis acceleration sensing (±2g, ±4g, ±8g, ±16g ranges)
  • Ultra-low power operation: 40 μA in active mode, 0.1 μA in standby
  • Selectable digital communication protocols: I2C (up to 400 kHz) and SPI (up to 5 MHz)
  • Integrated activity/inactivity detection, free-fall, tap, and double-tap sensing
  • 32-sample FIFO buffer to minimize host microcontroller polling
  • Compact PCB module with standard 0.1" pin headers for easy integration
  • Optimized performance-to-cost ratio for educational and prototyping use

Applications

  • Robotics platform stabilization and orientation control
  • Wearable device step counting and activity monitoring
  • IoT sensor node tilt and shock event logging
  • DIY gaming controller motion input and gesture recognition
  • Educational projects for physics and embedded systems labs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for this ADXL345 module?

The module operates from 2.0V to 3.6V DC. While the sensor IC itself is a 3.3V device, many breakout boards include level-shifting circuitry, allowing safe interfacing with 5V microcontroller logic. Always verify your specific module's schematic for level translation.

How do I choose between I2C and SPI communication?

The interface is selected by configuring the CS (Chip Select) pin. Pulling CS high enables I2C mode (using the SDA and SCL pins). Pulling CS low enables SPI mode (using the SDO, SDA, and SCL pins). SPI generally offers higher data rates, while I2C uses fewer pins for multi-device buses.

Can this sensor detect free-fall and tap events?

Yes. The ADXL345 has built-in, programmable detection functions for free-fall, single-tap, and double-tap events. These features use dedicated threshold and timing registers, allowing the sensor to generate an interrupt output signal to the host microcontroller, reducing software processing load.

Is this module compatible with 5V Arduino boards like the Uno?

Yes, but caution is required. Many Keyestudio modules include onboard logic level conversion. If yours does not, you must use a logic level converter between the Arduino's 5V pins and the module's 3.3V-sensitive I2C/SPI lines to prevent damage to the ADXL345 chip.
