Unshielded (non-flush) mounting, as used on this RM12 sensor, allows the magnetic field to extend laterally from the sides of the sensor face. This permits detection when the target approaches from the side and allows the sensor to be mounted flush with surrounding metal surfaces without affecting its sensing range. Shielded sensors require a non-metallic surround to function correctly.

Connect the brown wire to your positive DC supply voltage (6-36V), the blue wire to the DC common (0V), and the black wire to your PLC's digital input. The black wire is the switched NPN output; it will sink current to 0V (blue) when a metal target is detected, activating the PLC input. Ensure your PLC input is configured as a sinking (NPN) type.

This sensor detects all conductive metals, but its rated 4mm sensing distance is specified for standard mild steel (Fe360). For other metals, the effective sensing distance is reduced. For example, sensing distance for stainless steel is approximately 60-80% of the rated distance, for aluminum about 40-50%, and for copper about 30-40% of the 4mm rating.
