Description

The FSR402 operates on the principle of piezoresistivity, where applied force reduces the internal resistance of a specialized polymer ink layer. This change in resistance is inversely proportional to the applied force, allowing for precise measurement through a simple analog voltage divider circuit connected to a microcontroller’s ADC pin.

Its flexible substrate and minimal thickness make it ideal for embedding into wearable devices, soft robotics, and interactive surfaces without adding bulk. The sensor is uncalibrated, requiring system-level characterization for absolute force measurement, but provides excellent repeatability for relative pressure sensing and threshold detection applications.

Key Features

  • Flexible Thin-Film Construction: 0.3mm thick polymer-based sensor bends and conforms to curved surfaces.
  • Force-Sensitive Resistor (FSR) Technology: Output resistance decreases predictably with increasing applied force.
  • Broad Dynamic Range: Capable of detecting subtle touch through to significant loads up to 10 kilograms.
  • High-Speed Response: Sub-millisecond reaction time suitable for dynamic input and control loops.
  • Durable Operating Envelope: Functions reliably across an extended temperature range from -30°C to 60°C.
  • Simple Interfacing: Two-terminal device easily integrated with a pull-down resistor for analog voltage output.
  • Compact Active Area: 12.7mm diameter circular sensing zone provides localized force measurement.

Applications

  • Wearable biomechanics and gait analysis systems for pressure distribution monitoring.
  • Robotic end-effector and gripper tactile feedback for object handling and force control.
  • Interactive musical instruments and game controllers with pressure-sensitive inputs.
  • Medical devices for patient monitoring and rehabilitation equipment force feedback.
  • Industrial human-machine interface (HMI) panels and membrane switch augmentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I connect the FSR402 sensor to an Arduino?

Connect one FSR402 lead to the Arduino's 5V (or 3.3V) supply and the other lead to an analog input pin (e.g., A0). Place a fixed-value resistor (typically 10kΩ) between the analog pin and ground to form a voltage divider. The voltage at the analog pin will vary with the applied force, which your code can read using analogRead().

What is the output signal of the FSR402?

The FSR402 provides a variable resistance output. Its resistance is very high (several Megohms) when no force is applied and decreases non-linearly as force increases, down to a few hundred ohms at maximum force. It does not output a standard voltage or digital signal directly; you must use an external circuit (like a voltage divider) to convert the resistance change into a measurable analog voltage.

Can the FSR402 measure absolute weight or force?

The FSR402 is excellent for detecting the presence of force, relative changes in pressure, and threshold-based activation. For precise, absolute force measurement (e.g., in grams or Newtons), individual sensor calibration is required due to unit-to-unit variations and the non-linear resistance-to-force relationship. It is best used in applications where relative pressure or touch detection is sufficient.

What is the operating voltage for the FSR402?

The FSR402 itself does not have a specific operating voltage; it is a passive resistive component. The voltage applied across it in your circuit (e.g., 3.3V or 5V from your microcontroller) should be compatible with the rest of your measurement system, particularly the ADC reference voltage of your microcontroller. Avoid applying voltages that would cause excessive current through the sensor at low resistance states.
