Description

This sensor utilizes a grid of 36 individual Force-Sensing Resistor (FSR) elements printed on a flexible printed circuit (FPC). Each point acts as a variable resistor, changing its resistance in proportion to the applied force, enabling detailed spatial pressure mapping. The integrated signal conditioning provides a stable digital output via UART.

Its ultra-thin, flexible profile and robust FPC material make it suitable for integration into dynamic environments and on non-planar surfaces. With an operating temperature range of -20°C to +65°C and a high sampling frequency of up to 50Hz, it delivers responsive and reliable tactile feedback for advanced control systems and interactive projects.

Key Features

  • High-density 36-point tactile array for precise pressure distribution analysis.
  • Flexible and thin FPC substrate enables conformal mounting on complex geometries.
  • Digital UART output ensures noise-resistant communication and easy daisy-chaining.
  • Engineered for high repeatability and a long operational life exceeding one million cycles.
  • Optimized for rapid prototyping with broad microcontroller and SBC compatibility.
  • Provides granular sensitivity from light touch (20g) to significant loads (5kg).

Applications

  • Robotic end-effector grip force and slip detection for adaptive manipulation.
  • Pressure mapping in smart wearable devices and biomechanical analysis gloves.
  • Human-Machine Interface (HMI) development for touch-sensitive control panels.
  • Gait analysis and pressure distribution studies in sports science and rehabilitation.
  • Interactive art installations and tangible user interfaces requiring multi-point touch input.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the communication protocol for this pressure sensor array?

The sensor communicates via a UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver-Transmitter) interface. This provides a simple digital serial connection, typically using TX and RX pins, which reduces wiring complexity and is supported by most microcontrollers. The UART protocol also allows for daisy-chaining multiple sensor arrays on a single bus.

Can this flexible sensor be mounted on curved surfaces?

Yes, the sensor is constructed on a Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC), making it thin and pliable. This design allows it to conform to curved surfaces such as robotic finger joints, glove fingertips, or other non-planar mounting points without compromising the functionality of the individual 36 sensing points.

What is the minimum detectable force for each sensing point?

The trigger force for each of the 36 sensing points is 20 grams. This provides high sensitivity for detecting light touches. The full measurement range extends from this 20g threshold up to 5 kilograms of force per individual point, offering a wide dynamic range for various applications.

Is this sensor compatible with Raspberry Pi and ESP32?

Yes, the sensor is designed for broad compatibility. It works with 5V logic microcontrollers like many Arduino boards, as well as 3.3V logic systems such as the ESP32 and Raspberry Pi. For 3.3V systems, ensure logic level compatibility if connecting the UART lines directly.

How durable is this tactile pressure sensor array?

The sensor is rated for over 1,000,000 actuation cycles when tested with a 1kg force. This high durability is achieved through robust materials and construction, making it suitable for long-term use in repetitive applications like robotic gripping, interactive interfaces, and wearable devices.
