Description

The Grove Mini PIR Motion Sensor utilizes a passive infrared (PIR) sensing element (S16-L221D chip) to detect changes in infrared radiation emitted by moving objects, primarily humans, within its field of view. It outputs a digital HIGH signal on its SIG pin upon detection, providing a simple trigger for control systems. The sensor’s sensitivity can be mechanically adjusted by repositioning its Fresnel lens cap or electronically via an optional soldered rheostat.

Engineered for reliability in indoor environments, the sensor performs optimally at 25°C with a recommended detection distance of up to 2 meters. Its low-power design and Grove interface simplify integration into security systems, automated lighting controls, and presence monitoring applications, requiring minimal signal conditioning.

Key Features

  • Passive Infrared (PIR) Detection: Reliably senses human motion based on body heat radiation.
  • Adjustable Sensitivity Circuit: On-board solder pads allow for the addition of a potentiometer to fine-tune detection threshold.
  • Grove 4-Pin Connector: Standardized interface ensures quick, solder-free connections to a wide range of microcontroller development boards.
  • Optimized for Low-Power Applications: Exceptionally low quiescent current enables long-term operation on battery packs or solar power.
  • Compact PCB Design: Small footprint and lightweight construction facilitate integration into enclosures and wearable devices.
  • Digital Output Signal: Provides a clean, TTL-compatible HIGH/LOW signal for direct microcontroller GPIO input.

Applications

  • Battery-Powered IoT Presence Detectors: For smart home automation triggering lights or notifications upon room entry.
  • Security System Intrusion Alarms: As a trigger module in DIY burglar alarm systems to detect unauthorized movement.
  • Energy-Saving Light Switches: Automatic control of lighting in corridors, closets, or bathrooms based on occupancy.
  • Interactive Art Installations & Robotics: Enabling reactive behaviors in robots or interactive displays when a person approaches.
  • Visitor Counting & Occupancy Monitoring: Basic people counting for office spaces or retail environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for this Grove PIR sensor?

The sensor operates from 3.3V to 5V DC, making it directly compatible with common development platforms like Arduino (5V), Raspberry Pi (3.3V), ESP32, and other 3.3V microcontrollers without requiring a level shifter.

How do I adjust the sensitivity of the motion sensor?

Sensitivity can be adjusted in two ways. First, you can slightly lift the plastic Fresnel lens cap to enhance range. For precise electronic adjustment, solder a slide rheostat (potentiometer) to the reserved pads on the back of the PCB to fine-tune the trigger threshold between 120 and 530 µV.

What is the output signal type and how do I connect it to my microcontroller?

The module provides a digital output signal (HIGH/LOW) on its SIG pin. When motion is detected, the SIG pin goes HIGH (at the supply voltage, either 3.3V or 5V). Simply connect the Grove cable to a digital input pin on your microcontroller. The Grove system handles power (VCC, GND) and the signal connection automatically.

What is the typical detection range and does temperature affect it?

The recommended reliable detection range is up to 2 meters at an ambient temperature of 25°C. Performance can vary outside this temperature. The sensor is designed for indoor use, and extreme temperatures or direct airflow from HVAC vents can impact its sensitivity and stability.

Can this sensor be used in battery-powered projects?

Yes, its extremely low quiescent current draw of 12–20 µA makes it exceptionally suitable for battery-powered IoT devices. When paired with a microcontroller that supports sleep modes, you can achieve months of operation on a single battery charge for periodic motion monitoring applications.
