Description

The Waveshare MLX90614 module integrates the Melexis MLX90614 infrared thermopile sensor in a compact breakout board. It performs non-contact temperature measurement by detecting the infrared radiation emitted from an object’s surface. The sensor combines an IR-sensitive thermopile detector, a low-noise amplifier, a 17-bit ADC, and a powerful DSP unit within a single TO-39 package, enabling high-resolution readings with a resolution of 0.02°C.

The module is factory-calibrated for a broad object temperature range and includes built-in signal conditioning. It provides digital output via both I2C (SMBus) and configurable PWM, allowing for seamless integration with 3.3V or 5V logic microcontrollers without external level shifters. Its 35° field of view makes it suitable for measuring the average temperature over an area, not just a single point.

Key Features

  • High-precision non-contact temperature sensing based on infrared thermopile principle
  • Integrated 17-bit ADC and DSP for stable, high-resolution signal output
  • Factory-calibrated with gradient temperature compensation for reliable readings
  • Dual digital output interfaces: I2C (SMBus) and configurable 10-bit PWM
  • Wide operating voltage range (3.3V to 5V) with onboard level translation
  • Compact form factor (28mm x 16mm) with M2 mounting holes for secure installation
  • Fast response time suitable for dynamic temperature monitoring applications

Applications

  • Non-contact temperature monitoring in industrial automation and process control
  • Thermal management and fault detection in consumer electronics and appliances
  • Human presence detection and body temperature screening systems

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for this MLX90614 module?

The module operates from 3.3V to 5V DC. It includes onboard level translation, allowing it to interface directly with both 3.3V and 5V microcontroller systems like Arduino Uno, Raspberry Pi, or ESP32 without requiring external logic level converters.

How do I communicate with this sensor using I2C?

Connect the module's VCC, GND, SDA, and SCL pins to your microcontroller's corresponding I2C bus pins. The sensor uses the SMBus protocol, a subset of I2C. You can read the object and ambient temperature registers directly using standard I2C libraries available for Arduino, Python (on Raspberry Pi), or other MCU platforms.

What is the field of view (FOV) and how does it affect measurement?

The sensor has a 35° field of view. This means it measures the average infrared radiation from all objects within this conical area. For accurate spot measurements, the target object should completely fill the sensor's FOV, or you should be measuring the average temperature of a surface area.

Is this sensor calibrated, and what is its accuracy?

Yes, the MLX90614 is factory-calibrated. Within the ambient temperature range of 0°C to 50°C, the typical accuracy for object temperature measurement is ±0.5°C. Accuracy may vary slightly at the extreme ends of its full -70°C to +380°C measurement range.

Can this sensor measure human body temperature?

Yes, it is capable of measuring surface skin temperature within its specified range. For clinical-grade forehead or ear temperature readings, specific calibration for human skin emissivity and application-specific mounting/distance guidelines must be followed. It is suitable for presence detection and non-medical screening applications.
