The Adafruit VCNL4030 sensor module combines a proximity sensor and an ambient light sensor (ALS) on a single chip. The proximity function uses a calibrated infrared LED and a photodiode to detect the presence and approximate distance of objects up to 300mm through reflected IR light. The integrated ALS provides accurate ambient light intensity measurements across a broad dynamic range, from very dim to bright indoor lighting conditions.
Communication is handled via a standard I2C interface, with the onboard STEMMA QT / Qwiic connectors enabling rapid, solderless daisy-chaining with other compatible modules. The sensor’s key parameters, including IR LED current, integration time, and sensitivity thresholds, are fully configurable via registers, allowing developers to balance measurement speed, accuracy, and power consumption for specific applications.
