The Grove MQ3 module utilizes a metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) electrochemical sensing element. When exposed to target gases like alcohol, the sensor’s conductivity changes proportionally to the gas concentration, which is then converted into an analog voltage signal. This signal can be read directly by a microcontroller’s ADC pin for threshold detection or trend monitoring.
Designed for stability and a long operational life, the module includes a simple conditioning circuit and a potentiometer for calibrating the sensor’s response threshold. It is important to note that the output provides a relative indication of gas presence and trend, not a precise PPM concentration measurement, making it ideal for qualitative detection applications.
