Description

The Winsen FR03 Micro Flow Sensor is an upgraded successor to the F1013 series, utilizing a MEMS thermal sensing element to monitor pipeline gas flow. This principle measures the heat transfer caused by the moving gas medium, providing a direct reading of mass flow rate independent of pressure and temperature variations under standard conditions. The sensor features a compact, modular design with a low-pressure drop flow path.

Engineered for stability, the FR03 delivers high repeatability and an accuracy of ±(2 + 0.5% of Full Scale). It is calibrated for air under standard conditions by default, with options for custom gas calibration. For optimal accuracy, installation requires a straight inlet pipe section of at least 5x the nominal diameter. The sensor is intended for use with dry, clean, non-corrosive, and purified gases to prevent contamination of the sensitive MEMS element.

Key Features

  • MEMS Thermal Sensing: Provides fast response and high sensitivity to low flow rates with minimal flow pickup.
  • Multiple Full-Scale Ranges: Available in 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, or 0.5 SLM configurations to match application requirements.
  • Linear Analog Output: Standard 0.5V (zero flow) to 4.5V (full-scale flow) output with 200Ω impedance, easily interfaced with ADCs.
  • Low Power & Voltage Operation: Operates from a single 5-14V DC supply, drawing less than 10mA, suitable for portable and embedded systems.
  • Optimized Mechanical Design: DN3 flow path minimizes pressure loss and supports modular integration into gas circuits.
  • High Measurement Repeatability: Excellent long-term stability with a repeatability spec of 0.005.
  • Wide Operating Temperature: Functions reliably in environments from 0°C to 50°C.
  • Customizable Calibration: Can be calibrated for specific gas mixtures or conditions per customer request.

Applications

  • Precision gas dosing and flow control in laboratory analyzers and medical ventilators.
  • Monitoring purge gas or carrier gas flow in chromatography and analytical instrumentation.
  • Airflow measurement in compact HVAC systems, CPAP machines, and respiratory devices.
  • Process control for low-flow gas lines in semiconductor manufacturing and industrial gas blending.
  • Embedded system integration for IoT environmental monitors and smart appliance gas consumption tracking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the sensing principle of the Winsen FR03 flow sensor?

The FR03 utilizes a MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) thermal sensing principle. It measures the heat transfer from a heated element to the flowing gas, which correlates directly to the mass flow rate. This method provides fast response and high sensitivity, especially for low flow rates, and is independent of pressure changes under standard calibration conditions.

What gas media can the FR03 sensor be used with?

The FR03 is designed for dry, clean, non-corrosive, and purified gases. The gas must be free of dust, liquid droplets, and oil vapor to prevent contamination and damage to the sensitive MEMS element. For non-standard or mixed gases, custom calibration is available. A filtration device is recommended upstream if the gas source is not clean.

How do I interface the sensor's 0.5-4.5V output with a microcontroller?

Connect the sensor's output signal wire directly to an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) input pin on your microcontroller (e.g., Arduino, Raspberry Pi). The 0.5V corresponds to zero flow, and 4.5V corresponds to the selected full-scale flow (e.g., 0.5 SLM). Ensure your system's ground is common with the sensor. The output impedance is 200Ω, making it compatible with most ADC inputs without additional buffering.

What are the installation requirements for accurate measurement?

For optimal accuracy, install the sensor with a straight pipe section upstream (inlet) of at least 5 times the nominal diameter (5 x DN3 = 15mm minimum) and a straight section downstream (outlet) of at least 3 times the nominal diameter. This minimizes flow turbulence. Ensure the gas pressure does not exceed 1.2 times the sensor's maximum working pressure, and orient the sensor according to the flow direction arrow marked on the housing.

Can the FR03 be calibrated for a gas other than air?

Yes. While the sensor is factory-calibrated for air under standard conditions, Winsen offers customization and can calibrate the FR03 for specific gas mixtures, different flow profiles, or alternative output voltage ranges upon request. You must provide the exact gas composition and desired measurement range for the custom calibration process.
