Description

This combo sensor breakout combines ScioSense’s ENS160 metal oxide (MOX) gas sensor with Bosch’s BME280 MEMS environmental sensor. The ENS160 provides a calculated Air Quality Index (AQI), equivalent CO2 (eCO2), and Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC) readings, while the BME280 delivers calibrated temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure data. The ENS160 leverages the BME280’s precise humidity and temperature readings for internal compensation, significantly improving gas measurement accuracy and stability.

Communication is handled exclusively via the I2C interface, facilitated by two Qwiic connectors for rapid prototyping. The board operates at a typical 3.3V Qwiic bus voltage and features configurable I2C addresses for both sensors to avoid bus conflicts. Its robust design supports a wide industrial temperature range, making it suitable for demanding indoor air quality monitoring, smart HVAC control, and portable environmental data loggers.

Key Features

  • Comprehensive Environmental Monitoring: Simultaneously measures AQI (1-5), eCO2 (400-65,000 ppm), TVOC (0-65,000 ppb), temperature (±0.5°C), humidity (±3% RH), and pressure (±100 Pa).
  • Sensor Fusion Calibration: ENS160 utilizes BME280's real-time temperature and humidity data for on-chip calibration, ensuring reliable gas readings.
  • Plug-and-Play Qwiic Ecosystem: Features two Qwiic connectors for solderless, daisy-chainable I2C connections, accelerating prototype development.
  • High Precision & Resolution: Offers 1 ppm eCO2 resolution, 1 ppb TVOC resolution, and 0.18 Pa pressure resolution for detailed environmental analysis.
  • Industrial Operating Range: Functions reliably from -40°C to +85°C and 0% to 100% RH, suitable for harsh environments.
  • Flexible System Integration: Selectable I2C addresses (ENS160: 0x52/0x53; BME280: 0x76/0x77) enable multiple sensors on a single bus.
  • Compact & Low-Power Design: The 25 x 25 mm board is optimized for space-constrained and battery-powered IoT applications.
  • Stable Ozone Compensation: ENS160 includes built-in algorithms to compensate for ozone interference, enhancing long-term VOC measurement stability.

Applications

  • Smart HVAC & Building Automation: For demand-controlled ventilation systems that monitor CO2 and VOC levels to optimize air exchange and energy efficiency.
  • Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Monitors: Deployed in offices, schools, and homes to provide real-time AQI, temperature, and humidity feedback for health and comfort.
  • Portable Environmental Data Loggers: Integrated into battery-powered field devices for tracking microclimate conditions, pressure trends, and pollutant exposure.
  • IoT Weather Stations: Serves as a compact core module for DIY or educational weather stations measuring local temperature, humidity, pressure, and air quality.
  • Industrial Condition Monitoring: Used in controlled environments (e.g., laboratories, manufacturing) to ensure stable atmospheric conditions and detect VOC leaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage for this combo sensor breakout?

The board is designed for the Qwiic ecosystem and operates at a typical voltage of 3.3V. It draws power directly from the Qwiic connector. Applying voltages outside the 3.0V to 3.6V range may damage the sensitive ENS160 and BME280 sensors.

How do I connect multiple units on the same I2C bus?

Both the ENS160 and BME280 sensors on this breakout have configurable I2C addresses. The ENS160 can be set to 0x52 or 0x53, and the BME280 to 0x76 or 0x77, typically via solder jumpers or configuration pins on the board. This allows you to avoid address conflicts when daisy-chaining multiple sensor modules using Qwiic cables.

Does the ENS160 require calibration with the BME280 data?

Yes, for optimal accuracy. The ENS160 has an internal algorithm that uses accurate ambient temperature and humidity data (provided by the co-located BME280) to compensate its MOX gas sensor readings. This sensor fusion is handled on-chip, ensuring stable and reliable outputs for eCO2 and TVOC without complex user calibration.

What is the difference between AQI, eCO2, and TVOC outputs?

The ENS160 provides three primary air quality metrics: AQI is a simplified 1-5 index of overall air quality. eCO2 (equivalent CO2) estimates carbon dioxide levels based on VOC detection. TVOC measures the concentration of all volatile organic compounds in parts per billion. Together, they offer a comprehensive view of indoor air pollution.

Is this sensor suitable for outdoor weather station applications?

While the BME280 is excellent for measuring temperature, humidity, and pressure in outdoor environments, the ENS160 gas sensor is primarily designed for indoor air quality monitoring. For outdoor use, ensure the module is housed in a protective, breathable enclosure to shield it from direct rain and contaminants while allowing air exchange for accurate gas sensing.
