Figaro Engineering TGS2602 Air Quality / VOC Sensor - MOS Metal-Oxide Semiconductor
The Figaro Engineering TGS2602 is a metal-oxide semiconductor (MOS) air quality sensor designed for detecting low concentrations of VOCs and odorous gases like ammonia and hydrogen sulfide. It operates on a 5V DC heater and circuit voltage, making it compatible with standard microcontroller systems such as Arduino and Raspberry Pi for indoor air quality monitoring.
Features
- High sensitivity to low-concentration VOCs, ammonia (NH3), and hydrogen sulfide (H2S).
- Low power consumption with typical heater draw of 280mW (56mA at 5V).
- MOS sensing principle provides variable conductivity proportional to gas concentration.
- Robust TO-5 metal can package ensures long-term stability and durability.
- Simple interface requiring only a basic voltage divider circuit for signal output.

The TGS2602 sensing element consists of a metal-oxide semiconductor layer deposited on an alumina substrate with an integrated heater. In the presence of detectable gases, the sensor’s conductivity increases, which can be measured as a change in voltage across an external load resistor. This analog output signal corresponds directly to the concentration of target contaminants in the ambient air.
Engineered for long-term operation in indoor environments, the sensor is optimized to detect gaseous emissions from waste materials, construction products, and wood finishing. Its stable performance across a typical range of environmental conditions (20°C, 65% RH) makes it suitable for integration into air purifiers, smart HVAC controls, and indoor air quality monitoring systems.
