Description

The M5Stack VL53L0X integrates STMicroelectronics’ second-generation FlightSenseâ„¢ ToF technology, utilizing a Single Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) array to measure the round-trip time of a 940nm infrared laser pulse. This method provides fast, sub-30ms ranging that is unaffected by the color or reflectivity of the target object, a significant advantage over traditional infrared proximity sensors.

The module is fully assembled and includes an onboard microcontroller for sensor management and I2C communication. Its 940nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) is invisible to the human eye and features internal optical filters for enhanced performance in bright ambient light conditions. The compact form factor and standard I2C protocol make it ideal for integration into robotics, drones, and automated systems requiring precise, non-contact distance sensing.

Key Features

  • High-precision Time-of-Flight (ToF) laser ranging sensor.
  • 940nm VCSEL laser emitter with internal IR filters for ambient light immunity.
  • Advanced SPAD array and ST FlightSenseâ„¢ technology for accurate measurement.
  • Standard I2C interface (0x29 default address) for easy MCU integration.
  • Robust performance across varying target colors and surface textures.
  • Compact, ready-to-use module with pre-soldered headers.
  • Wide operating temperature range from -20°C to +70°C.
  • Includes Lego-compatible mounting holes for prototyping.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for the M5Stack VL53L0X module?

The module requires a supply voltage between 2.6V and 3.5V DC. It is designed for 3.3V logic systems commonly found on development boards like Arduino, ESP32, and Raspberry Pi. Ensure your power source can provide stable voltage within this range for accurate sensor operation.

How do I connect and communicate with this sensor?

The module uses a standard I2C interface. Connect the SDA and SCL pins to your microcontroller's corresponding I2C pins, along with VCC (2.6-3.5V) and GND. The default I2C address is 0x29 (CubePilot). You can use libraries from STMicroelectronics or community libraries for Arduino and Python to read distance measurements.

How does the VL53L0X handle different colored or reflective targets?

The Time-of-Flight (ToF) principle measures the flight time of a laser pulse, not the intensity of reflected light. This makes the measurement largely independent of the target's color, reflectivity, or texture, providing consistent accuracy across a wide variety of surfaces compared to traditional IR sensors.

What is the maximum update rate and measurement range?

The sensor can provide a new distance measurement in less than 30 milliseconds. Its maximum reliable ranging distance is up to 2 meters under optimal conditions. Performance can be affected by extreme ambient light, but the integrated 940nm filter provides strong immunity.
