EDATEC 4MP 1.12mm Ultra Wide Angle Lens

This lens is compatible with any camera module featuring a standard M12 (also known as S-Mount) lens thread, which is common on many Raspberry Pi Camera variants, OpenMV Cam boards, and industrial 4MP sensors. You simply unscrew the default lens and thread this one in its place, ensuring the sensor is clean to avoid dust spots.

The pronounced barrel distortion characteristic of a 1.12mm lens can be corrected digitally using dewarping algorithms. In OpenCV, you would use camera calibration to derive distortion coefficients and apply cv2.undistort. For Raspberry Pi, libraries like picamera2 offer lens shading correction. For precise measurements, performing a full camera calibration with a checkerboard pattern is recommended to generate an accurate correction map.

While this lens provides a very wide field of view, its ultra-short focal length is not ideal for detailed close-up work like facial recognition or text reading at a distance, as subjects will appear smaller in the frame. It is best suited for scene context, motion detection, and environmental mapping. For detail-oriented tasks, pair it with a higher-magnification lens or use a multi-camera setup.
