Description

The Winsen MQ-8 hydrogen gas sensor utilizes a tin dioxide (SnO2) semiconductor sensing element. In clean air, the sensor’s conductivity is low. When hydrogen gas is present, the conductivity increases proportionally with the gas concentration. This change in conductivity is converted into a corresponding output voltage signal through an external load resistor, enabling precise concentration measurement.

Designed for long-term reliability, the sensor features a robust bakelite base and metal cap construction. It is calibrated for optimal performance under standard conditions of 20°C ±2°C and 55% ±5% relative humidity. The module is engineered for integration into safety monitoring systems, leak detection setups, and educational projects requiring hydrogen sensing.

Key Features

  • Semiconductor SnO2 sensing element specifically tuned for hydrogen (H2) gas.
  • Wide detecting range from 100 ppm to 1000 ppm of hydrogen.
  • Requires a 5.0V AC or DC supply for the internal heater element.
  • Outputs an analog voltage signal ranging from approximately 2.5V to 4.0V in 1000 ppm H2.
  • High sensitivity ratio: Rs(in air)/Rs(in 1000ppm H2) ≥ 5.
  • Durable construction with a bakelite standard encapsulation and protective metal cap.
  • Compact form factor measuring 19 mm in diameter and 24 mm in length.
  • Optimized performance-to-cost ratio for reliable hydrogen detection applications.

Applications

  • Hydrogen leak detection in laboratory settings and fuel cell research environments.
  • Safety monitoring systems for industrial processes involving hydrogen gas.
  • City gas (which contains hydrogen) detection and alarm systems.
  • Educational projects and prototyping for gas sensing with Arduino or Raspberry Pi.
  • Integration into portable air quality monitors and multi-gas detection units.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage for the MQ-8 sensor's heater?

The internal heater of the Winsen MQ-8 sensor requires a stable 5.0V supply, which can be either AC or DC. The sensing circuit itself is typically powered from the same 5V DC logic rail used by microcontrollers like Arduino. Ensure your power source can provide sufficient current for the heater's initial warm-up period.

How do I interface the MQ-8 sensor with an Arduino?

Connect the MQ-8's VCC and GND to the Arduino's 5V and GND pins. For analog reading, connect the sensor's analog output pin to an Arduino analog input (e.g., A0). You will need to add a load resistor (typically 4.7kΩ to 10kΩ) between the output pin and ground. The digital output pin can be connected to a digital input for a simple threshold alarm.

What is the detection range and output signal of this sensor?

The MQ-8 detects hydrogen concentrations between 100 parts per million (ppm) and 1000 ppm. Its output is an analog voltage that varies from approximately 2.5V in clean air to around 4.0V when exposed to 1000 ppm of H2 gas. This voltage can be read directly by a microcontroller's ADC to calculate the gas concentration.

Does the sensor require any pre-heating or calibration?

Yes, the MQ-8 semiconductor sensor requires a pre-heating period of typically 24-48 hours when first used or after a long storage period to stabilize its readings. For accurate quantitative measurement, calibration with known hydrogen concentrations in clean air is recommended. The sensor's baseline can drift with environmental changes.

Is the MQ-8 sensor selective only to hydrogen gas?

While the MQ-8 has high sensitivity to hydrogen and is designed for H2 detection, semiconductor sensors like this can respond to other combustible gases to varying degrees. It features anti-interference characteristics, but for critical safety applications, confirming sensor response with the target gas in the specific environment is advised.
