Description

The Grove 1-Wire Thermocouple Amplifier is built around the MAX31850K IC, a complete thermocouple-to-digital converter. It performs signal amplification, analog-to-digital conversion, and cold-junction compensation internally, outputting a calibrated digital temperature reading directly over the 1-Wire protocol. This eliminates the need for external compensation circuits and complex analog signal conditioning.

Designed specifically for K-type thermocouples, the module is ideal for high-temperature industrial monitoring, scientific instrumentation, and energy system diagnostics where measurement ranges exceed the limits of standard IC-based sensors. Its robust 1-Wire communication allows a single microcontroller GPIO pin to monitor numerous sensors across distributed systems, simplifying wiring and control architecture.

Key Features

  • MAX31850K-based signal conditioner with 14-bit resolution and ±2°C accuracy.
  • Integrated cold-junction compensation sensor for high-accuracy readings across the full -270°C to +1768°C range.
  • 1-Wire digital interface supports multi-drop bus topology with unique 64-bit serial codes.
  • Comprehensive fault detection for open thermocouple, short to ground, or short to power supply.
  • Wide operating voltage range of 3.0V to 5.5V DC for compatibility with 3.3V and 5V logic systems.
  • Extended operating temperature range from -40°C to +125°C for harsh environments.
  • Compact Grove form factor (40mm x 20mm) with standardized 2-pin input and 4-pin output connectors.

Applications

  • High-temperature process monitoring in industrial furnaces, kilns, and ovens.
  • Energy system diagnostics for solar thermal collectors, engine exhaust, and power plant components.
  • Scientific research and laboratory instrumentation requiring wide-range temperature profiling.
  • Distributed temperature sensing networks in manufacturing facilities using 1-Wire multi-drop capability.
  • DIY and educational projects involving high-temperature measurements with Arduino or Raspberry Pi.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of thermocouple does this amplifier module support?

This module is designed exclusively for use with K-type (chromel–alumel) thermocouples. It integrates cold-junction compensation calibrated for the K-type Seebeck coefficient and will not provide accurate readings with other thermocouple types like J, T, or E.

How do I connect multiple thermocouple amplifiers to a single microcontroller pin?

The MAX31850K features a 1-Wire digital interface and a unique 64-bit ROM ID in each device. You can connect multiple amplifiers in parallel on a single 1-Wire bus (one data line plus ground). The microcontroller acts as the bus master, addressing each sensor individually by its unique serial code for simultaneous multi-point temperature monitoring.

What is the operating voltage range, and is it 5V tolerant?

The module operates from 3.0V to 5.5V DC, making it compatible with both 3.3V and 5V logic systems. The 1-Wire data line is pulled up to the supply voltage (VCC) internally, so you should connect it to a microcontroller GPIO pin configured for the same logic level to ensure reliable communication.

What does the 'open thermocouple detection' feature do?

The integrated fault detection circuit monitors the thermocouple connection. If the thermocouple wire breaks or becomes disconnected (open circuit), the module sets a fault flag in its output data register. This allows your control system to identify and alert operators to sensor failure, preventing reliance on erroneous temperature readings.
