Description

The RFM98W module integrates HopeRF’s patented LoRa modulation technology into a compact, surface-mount transceiver. This enables reliable spread-spectrum communication over several kilometers while maintaining high interference immunity and minimizing current draw, making it ideal for challenging RF environments.

Its bullet-proof front end (IIP3 = -12.5 dBm) and excellent blocking immunity ensure stable operation even with nearby transmitters. The module features a fully integrated frequency synthesizer, automatic Channel Activity Detection (CAD), and a packet engine handling up to 256-byte frames with CRC, simplifying firmware development for LPWAN applications.

Key Features

  • LoRa long-range modem providing spread spectrum communication with high interference immunity.
  • +20 dBm constant RF output power for maximum range, backed by a high-efficiency +14 dBm power amplifier.
  • Extremely high receiver sensitivity down to -148 dBm, enabling long-distance links.
  • Ultra-low power consumption with 10.3 mA active RX current and 200 nA register retention sleep current.
  • Supports FSK, GFSK, MSK, GMSK, LoRa, and OOK modulation for protocol flexibility.
  • Built-in packet engine with CRC, preamble detection, and automatic RF Sense & CAD for efficient communication.
  • Integrated temperature sensor and low-battery indicator for system monitoring.
  • Compact 16x16x2 mm form factor suitable for space-constrained embedded designs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I interface with the RFM98W module?

The RFM98W communicates via a standard SPI interface. Connect the module's SPI pins (MOSI, MISO, SCK, NSS) to your microcontroller's SPI port. You must then use a library like RadioHead or the Semtech SX127x driver to send AT-style configuration commands over SPI to set frequency, power, modulation (LoRa/FSK), and data rate before transmitting or receiving packets.

What antenna should I use with this 433MHz module?

Use a 433MHz antenna with a 50-ohm impedance. Since the module has SMD pads, you must solder a matching network (typically an LC circuit) and connect a wire antenna or solder an IPEX/u.FL connector for a external antenna. For best range, a 1/4-wave whip (approx. 16.5cm) or a properly tuned external antenna with an SMA connector via a pigtail is recommended to achieve the stated -148 dBm sensitivity and +20 dBm output.

What is the power supply requirement for the RFM98W?

The module requires a stable 3V DC power supply. Ensure your voltage regulator can provide sufficient current, especially during transmission at +20 dBm, where peak current can exceed 100 mA. For battery operation, implement deep sleep modes using the module's 200 nA register retention feature to minimize average consumption, making it suitable for solar-powered or long-life battery IoT nodes.
