Description

The VL53L1X sensor utilizes STMicroelectronics’ latest FlightSenseâ„¢ ToF technology, integrating a SPAD (Single Photon Avalanche Diode) receiving array, a 940 nm VCSEL laser emitter, and advanced optics into a single miniature module. This technology enables absolute distance measurement independent of target color and reflectance, providing superior performance compared to conventional infrared sensors.

Housed on a compact breakout board by Pimoroni, the module operates from a single 2.8V supply (2.6V to 3.5V range) and features shutdown and interrupt pins for power management. Its robust design allows it to be mounted behind various cover window materials, making it suitable for integration into finished products requiring reliable, long-distance proximity sensing.

Key Features

  • Fully integrated miniature ToF module with a 27° typical field of view.
  • SPAD receiving array with integrated lens and physical infrared filters for optimal performance.
  • Pin-to-pin compatible with the earlier VL53L0X sensor for easy upgrades.
  • Programmable ROI size and position on the receiving array for multi-zone operation.
  • Low-power microcontroller runs advanced digital firmware for accurate, stable ranging.
  • Designed for easy integration as a single, reflowable surface-mount component.
  • Software drivers and code examples provided for turnkey implementation.

Applications

  • Robotics and drone navigation for long-distance obstacle avoidance and landing assistance.
  • Smart retail and inventory management for presence detection on shelves and vending machines.
  • User detection and gesture recognition in smart home automation and PC/laptop peripherals.
  • Laser-assisted autofocus systems for cameras and video tracking.
  • Service and cleaning robots for fast, accurate environmental mapping.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for the VL53L1X breakout module?

The module requires a single power supply between 2.6V and 3.5V. It is designed for 3.3V logic systems commonly found on development boards like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and ESP32. Ensure your host system can provide a stable voltage within this range for reliable operation.

How do I communicate with this sensor, and what is the maximum I2C speed?

Communication is via a standard I2C interface, which uses SDA and SCL lines. The sensor supports I2C clock speeds up to 1 MHz, allowing for fast data transfer to match its high 50 Hz ranging frequency. Libraries and code examples are available from Pimoroni and STMicroelectronics.

Can the sensor's field of view be adjusted for specific applications?

Yes, the VL53L1X features a programmable Region of Interest (ROI). You can adjust both the size and the position of the ROI on the sensor's SPAD array, effectively reducing or shifting the field of view. This allows for multi-zone operation and focusing on specific areas within the 27° FoV.

Is the 940 nm laser emitter safe, and can it work behind glass or plastic?

The emitter is a Class 1 laser product, meaning it is eye-safe under normal operating conditions. The sensor is designed to operate reliably behind many common cover window materials, such as IR-transparent glass or plastic, with minimal performance degradation, making it suitable for enclosed product designs.
