Optical Flow Sensor V1.0 Module
The Optical Flow Sensor V1.0 is a motion detection module based on the ADNS3080 optical mouse sensor, designed for horizontal velocity and displacement measurement in robotics and drone flight controllers like APM 2.5/2.6/2.8. It requires a well-lit environment and interfaces via SPI for integration with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and other microcontroller platforms.
Features
- Based on ADNS3080 high-performance optical navigation sensor.
- Measures surface-relative motion for velocity and displacement tracking.
- SPI digital interface for direct connection to microcontrollers (Arduino, STM32, ESP32).
- Requires ambient light for operation; includes fixed-focus lens with >30cm minimum focus distance.
- Compact 35mm x 25mm x 30mm PCB module design for embedded integration.

The Optical Flow Sensor V1.0 utilizes a specialized CMOS image sensor and digital signal processor (DSP) to track microscopic surface patterns, calculating relative motion vectors. This provides precise, low-latency data on lateral displacement and velocity, essential for stabilizing multirotor drones and autonomous robots in GPS-denied environments.
The module operates on a standard 3.3V or 5V logic supply and communicates via a 4-wire SPI protocol, outputting motion delta values (Δx, Δy) and surface quality metrics. Its fixed-focus optical assembly is calibrated for distances greater than 30cm, and performance is dependent on adequate surface texture and ambient lighting conditions.
