MQ-4 Methane CNG Gas Detector Module - Analog & TTL Output
The MQ-4 is a high-sensitivity gas sensor module designed for detecting methane (CH4) and compressed natural gas (CNG) concentrations from 300 to 10,000 ppm. Operating on a 5V DC supply, it provides both analog (0-5V) and digital TTL outputs for direct interfacing with microcontrollers like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and ESP32.
Features
- High sensitivity to methane (CH4) and compressed natural gas (CNG)
- Dual output: analog (0-5V) and digital TTL signal
- Wide detecting range from 300 ppm to 10,000 ppm
- Onboard comparator (LM393) with adjustable threshold potentiometer
- Simple 5V DC operation with standard 0.1″ header pin interface

The MQ-4 sensor module utilizes a metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensing element that changes conductivity in the presence of reducing gases like methane. The onboard LM393 comparator provides a clean digital TTL output that triggers when the gas concentration exceeds a user-adjustable threshold, set via the onboard potentiometer. An LED indicator provides visual confirmation of gas detection.
Designed for easy integration into electronic projects, the module conditions the raw sensor signal, simplifying the interface to the odd pin spacing of the bare MQ-4 sensor. The analog output provides a voltage proportional to gas concentration, suitable for connection to an ADC pin on a microcontroller for precise measurement. The module offers stable performance and a quick response and recovery time for reliable monitoring applications.
