Description

The MPU9250 module is a multi-chip module (MCM) that combines a 3-axis MEMS accelerometer, a 3-axis MEMS gyroscope, and a 3-axis AK8963 magnetometer within a single QFN package. This integration provides a complete 9-degree-of-freedom (9-DOF) inertial measurement unit (IMU) capable of precise attitude and heading reference system (AHRS) calculations. The onboard voltage regulator and logic level converter ensure stable operation and safe communication with both 3.3V and 5V logic microcontrollers.

Communication is handled exclusively via the I2C serial bus, simplifying wiring and firmware development. The module includes built-in digital motion processors (DMP) and filters to reduce noise from external sources like motors, enhancing data accuracy for dynamic applications. Its compact footprint and low power consumption make it suitable for embedded systems where space and efficiency are critical.

Key Features

  • Complete 9-axis motion fusion from a single integrated sensor package.
  • Onboard ultra-low-noise 3.3V linear regulator allows flexible 3.3V-5V power input.
  • Built-in pull-up resistors on SDA, SCL, and nCS lines for reliable I2C communication.
  • Includes pull-down resistors on FSYNC and AD0 pins for proper configuration.
  • Integrated digital filters minimize noise from high-current peripherals and vibrations.
  • Immersion gold PCB with machine welding ensures long-term reliability and signal integrity.
  • Configurable I2C address (0x68 or 0x69) enables multiple sensor use on one bus.
  • Power indicator LED for quick operational status verification.

Applications

  • FPV drone and RC vehicle flight stabilization and navigation systems.
  • Robotic platform balancing, dead reckoning, and inertial navigation.
  • Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) headset motion tracking.
  • Wearable device gesture recognition and activity monitoring.
  • Industrial equipment vibration analysis and impact detection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the default I2C address of this MPU9250 module, and how can I change it?

The default I2C address is 0x68. You can change it to 0x69 by pulling the AD0 pin high (connecting it to VCC). The module includes a pull-down resistor on AD0, so you must actively drive it high to change the address, allowing you to connect multiple sensors on the same I2C bus.

Can I power this module directly from a 5V Arduino pin?

Yes. The module includes an onboard 3.3V low-dropout (LDO) voltage regulator. You can safely supply 5V to the VCC pin, and the regulator will provide the correct 3.3V to the MPU9250 chip. A solder Jumper is also provided to bypass this regulator if you wish to power the module directly with 3.3V.

What are the configurable ranges for the accelerometer and gyroscope?

The accelerometer offers full-scale ranges of ±2g, ±4g, ±8g, and ±16g. The gyroscope offers ranges of ±250°/s, ±500°/s, ±1000°/s, and ±2000°/s. These ranges are software-selectable via the I2C interface, allowing you to optimize the sensor's sensitivity and dynamic range for your specific application.

Does this module require any external components for basic I2C operation?

No, external pull-up resistors are not necessary for basic I2C operation. The module already includes onboard pull-up resistors on the SDA and SCL lines. You only need to connect four wires: VCC (3.3V-5V), GND, SDA, and SCL to your microcontroller's corresponding I2C pins.
