Description

The KSD301 is a bimetallic disc thermostat that utilizes the differential thermal expansion of bonded metals to provide a snap-action switching mechanism. At its calibrated trip temperature of 110°C, the disc abruptly reverses its curvature, opening the normally-closed contacts to break the circuit. Upon cooling below the reset temperature, the disc snaps back, re-establishing the electrical connection.

Encapsulated in a Bakelite (phenolic resin) shell, the switch offers excellent electrical insulation, flame resistance, and mechanical rigidity. This design ensures reliable operation in environments with electrical noise, vibration, and thermal cycling, making it suitable for direct integration into heating elements, motor windings, and power conversion units without requiring additional signal conditioning.

Key Features

  • Fixed-Calibration Bimetallic Actuator for precise thermal response
  • High-Break-Capacity Contacts rated for 10A resistive loads
  • Bakelite Enclosure providing UL94-V0 equivalent flame retardancy
  • Snap-Action Mechanism ensures clean, bounce-free contact separation
  • Automatic Reset functionality upon temperature drop below trip point
  • Compact and robust design for PCB mounting or chassis installation
  • Wide voltage compatibility from low-voltage DC up to 250V AC

Applications

  • Over-temperature protection in power supplies, battery chargers, and transformers
  • Thermal cutoff for heating elements in coffee makers, soldering irons, and appliances
  • Motor winding and compressor protection in HVAC and refrigeration systems
  • Safety interlock in 3D printer hotends and industrial process heaters
  • Temperature control in incubators, terrariums, and thermal management enclosures

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the electrical rating of the KSD301 thermostat?

The KSD301 is rated for a maximum current of 10 Amps at a voltage of up to 250 Volts, AC or DC. This allows it to directly switch significant loads like heating elements or motors without requiring a relay in many applications.

Is the KSD301 switch Normally Open (NO) or Normally Closed (NC)?

This unit is a Normally Closed (NC) switch. The contacts are closed at room temperature, allowing current to flow. When the sensing temperature reaches 110°C, the bimetallic disc snaps open, breaking the circuit to provide over-temperature protection.

How do I mount and wire the KSD301 thermal switch?

The switch can be mounted via its metal bracket or directly to a chassis for optimal thermal coupling. Electrically, it is wired in series with the load (e.g., heater) and power source. Ensure good thermal contact with the device being monitored for accurate temperature response.

Does the KSD301 reset automatically?

Yes, it features an automatic reset. Once the local temperature cools below the trip point (typically a few degrees below 110°C), the bimetallic disc will snap back to its original position, closing the contacts and restoring power to the circuit.

What is the typical accuracy and lifespan of this thermal switch?

Standard bimetallic thermostats like the KSD301 have a typical tolerance of ±3-5°C around the 110°C set point. They are designed for high reliability and can endure tens of thousands of cycles under rated electrical loads, making them suitable for long-term protection.
