Description

The JTAGulator is a specialized open-source hardware tool engineered to simplify the complex and often tedious process of locating on-chip debug (OCD) interfaces on electronic devices. It targets test points, vias, or component pads to automatically identify connections for protocols like JTAG/IEEE 1149.1 and UART serial, which are critical for firmware extraction, memory modification, and live device analysis. This capability is essential for hardware security research, reverse engineering, and legitimate development debugging.

Built around a Parallax Propeller microcontroller, the device offers 24 I/O channels with input protection circuitry and a software-adjustable target voltage, ensuring safe interaction with a wide range of target boards from 1.2V to 3.3V logic levels. The USB interface provides a direct link to host software, enabling automated scanning and analysis. Beyond its primary function, the JTAGulator platform can be repurposed as a basic logic analyzer or a general-purpose Propeller development board, adding to its utility in an embedded systems lab.
