Description

The LJ5A3-1-Z/AX is a shielded, cylindrical inductive proximity sensor that generates an electromagnetic field to detect the presence of ferrous and non-ferrous metal targets without physical contact. Its NPN normally-closed (NC) solid-state output switches to an open state upon target detection, providing a reliable signal for machine control and position feedback.

Encased in a brass-nickel plated housing with an IP65 environmental rating, the sensor is protected against dust ingress and low-pressure water jets, making it suitable for washdown areas and industrial automation lines. The integrated 1.2-meter cable facilitates straightforward wiring to control cabinets, PLCs, or relay modules.

Key Features

  • NPN Normally Closed Output: Provides a sinking current path (up to 150mA) that opens when a metal target enters the 1mm sensing zone.
  • Shielded (Flush-Mountable) Design: Allows installation flush with metal mounting surfaces without false triggering from surrounding material.
  • Industrial-Grade Construction: Brass-nickel plated housing and ABS sensing face ensure long-term reliability in demanding conditions.
  • Wide Voltage Compatibility: Operates from 10 to 30VDC, compatible with standard 12V and 24V industrial control systems.
  • Built-in Protection: Includes reverse polarity protection to prevent damage from incorrect wiring.
  • Compact M12 Form Factor: Standard threaded body enables quick installation and replacement in automated machinery.

Applications

  • Position verification of metal components on conveyor belts and assembly lines.
  • End-of-travel or limit sensing in CNC machines, actuators, and robotic arms.
  • Presence detection for part counting and sorting systems in material handling.
  • Safety interlock and door monitoring in industrial machinery enclosures.
  • Proximity switching in automated packaging and filling equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between NPN Normally Closed (NC) and Normally Open (NO) output?

An NPN Normally Closed (NC) output provides a continuous current path to ground (sinking) when no target is present. When a metal object enters the sensing range, this path opens, interrupting the signal. Conversely, an NPN Normally Open (NO) output only provides a path to ground when a target is detected. The NC configuration is often used for safety-critical circuits where a wire break should trigger a fault state.

Can this sensor detect non-ferrous metals like aluminum or copper?

Yes, inductive proximity sensors can detect all conductive metals, but the effective sensing distance (Sn) is reduced for non-ferrous metals. For this LJ5A3 model with a 1mm nominal range for steel, the sensing distance for aluminum or copper will be approximately 0.3-0.5mm. Always verify detection reliability with the actual target material during system commissioning.

How do I wire this NPN NC sensor to a PLC digital input?

Connect the sensor's brown wire to the positive DC supply (10-30VDC), and the blue wire to the supply common (0V). Connect the black (signal) wire to your PLC's digital input terminal. The PLC input's common must be connected to the positive supply voltage (sourcing input). With no target present, the NPN NC switch is closed, completing the circuit and the PLC input reads 'ON'. When a target is detected, the switch opens and the input reads 'OFF'.

What does 'shielded' or 'flush-mountable' mean for this sensor?

A 'shielded' or 'flush-mountable' inductive sensor has its sensing face surrounded by a metal ring (the shield). This allows the sensor to be installed flush with, or embedded into, a metal mounting bracket without the surrounding metal causing false triggers. Unshielded sensors require a clearance zone around the sensing face. The LJ5A3-1-Z/AX is a shielded design, offering greater installation flexibility.
