DFRobot Fermion TMF8701 ToF Distance Sensor 10–600mm - I2C Breakout
The DFRobot Fermion TMF8701 is a high-precision time-of-flight (ToF) distance sensor module with a 10–600mm range, designed for 3.3V I2C systems like Raspberry Pi, ESP32, and Arduino. It features integrated algorithms for proximity and ranging modes, enabling reliable object detection in both dark and sunlit environments.
Features
- ±5% accuracy Time-of-Flight (ToF) distance measurement from 10mm to 600mm.
- Dual-mode operation: Proximity detection (1–10cm) and precise ranging mode.
- On-chip histogram for dynamic cover glass calibration and crosstalk compensation.
- 940nm VCSEL Class 1 eye-safe laser with built-in sunlight rejection filters.
- Low-power I2C interface breakout with 2.54mm pin spacing for easy prototyping.

The TMF8701 sensor utilizes a direct time-of-flight principle, measuring the time difference between emitted 940nm light pulses and their reflection to calculate distance with ±5% accuracy. This method ensures reliable performance independent of an object’s color, reflectivity, or surface texture. An integrated microcontroller handles all algorithms on-chip, eliminating the need for external optics or complex signal processing.
Engineered for robustness, the module includes a built-in histogram for dynamic compensation of cover glass contamination (dirt, smudges) and crosstalk, maintaining measurement integrity. Advanced on-chip sunlight rejection filters and a high dynamic range allow stable operation in challenging lighting conditions, from complete darkness to direct sunlight. The sensor is housed on a compact breakout board with standard 2.54mm headers for seamless integration into 3.3V digital systems.
