Description

The Amphenol SGX Sensortech sensor utilizes a robust MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) platform with a metal-oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensing element. When the integrated heater brings the sensing layer to its optimal operating temperature, the electrical resistance of the layer changes in proportion to the concentration of specific reducing gases present. This change in resistance is measured and can be translated into a corresponding gas concentration reading via an external microcontroller’s analog-to-digital converter or signal conditioning circuit.

Designed for high-volume, cost-sensitive applications, the sensor offers a wide operational envelope from -25°C to 85°C and humidity from 55% to 85% RH. Its miniature 5 x 7 x 1.55 mm package enables integration into compact portable devices, smart home appliances, and industrial safety equipment requiring reliable detection of combustible and toxic gases.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating principle of this Amphenol SGX Sensortech gas sensor?

This sensor uses a metal-oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensing element. An integrated heater brings the sensing layer to a specific temperature, where its electrical resistance changes upon exposure to target reducing gases like ammonia, hydrogen, or ethanol. This resistance change is measured to determine gas concentration.

What is the required heater voltage and current for this sensor?

The sensor's integrated heater operates at 2.4V DC with a nominal current of 32mA, resulting in a maximum power dissipation of 88 mW. It is critical to provide a stable, regulated 2.4V supply to the heater pins for proper sensor function and accurate readings.

How do I interface this sensor with a microcontroller like an Arduino?

The sensor provides a resistive output. You typically connect one side of the sensing element to a bias voltage (Vc) and the other side to a pull-down resistor to form a voltage divider. The midpoint is connected to an analog input pin on your microcontroller (Arduino, ESP32, etc.) to read the voltage, which correlates to sensor resistance and gas concentration.

What gases can this specific SGX sensor detect?

This multi-gas sensor is designed to detect Ammonia (NH3), Ethanol (C2H5OH), Hydrogen (H2), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Methane (CH4), Propane, and Iso-butane. Its detection ranges vary by gas, typically from 1 ppm to over 300 ppm, making it suitable for leak detection and air quality monitoring.
