Description

The KSD301 is a bimetallic disc thermostat that functions as a fixed-temperature, normally-open (NO) safety or control switch. Upon reaching its calibrated trip point of 70°C, the internal bimetallic disc snaps to close the circuit, activating a connected load or alarm. Upon cooling below the reset temperature, the disc snaps back to open the circuit.

Housed in a Bakelite shell, the switch provides excellent electrical insulation and resistance to heat deformation. This design is engineered for integration into appliances, power supplies, transformers, and heating equipment where over-temperature protection or basic thermal regulation is required, offering a cost-effective and highly reliable mechanical solution without the need for external power.

Key Features

  • Bimetallic snap-action mechanism ensures precise, repeatable switching at 70°C
  • Bakelite enclosure provides high dielectric strength and heat resistance
  • SPST normally-open (NO) contact configuration for fail-safe circuit design
  • Rated for 250V AC / 10A, suitable for direct control of heating elements and motors
  • Compact and lightweight design for easy integration into confined spaces
  • Fixed calibration eliminates the need for user adjustment, ensuring consistent operation
  • Robust construction for long-term reliability in varied thermal environments

Applications

  • Over-temperature protection in coffee makers, water heaters, and small appliances
  • Thermal cut-off safety switch in power supplies, battery chargers, and transformers
  • Temperature regulation in incubators, terrariums, and simple environmental controls
  • Heating element control in soldering irons, glue guns, and DIY heating pads
  • Motor and pump protection in ventilation systems and fluid circulators

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 'Normally Open (NO)' mean for this KSD301 thermostat?

The 'Normally Open' (NO) designation means the switch contacts are open (no circuit continuity) at ambient temperatures below its 70°C set point. When the temperature rises to 70°C, the bimetallic disc snaps, closing the contacts to complete the circuit. It is a SPST (Single Pole, Single Throw) switch designed to activate a load (like a cooling fan or alarm) when overheating occurs.

Can I use this switch to directly control a 120V AC heating element?

Yes, the KSD301 is rated for 250V AC and 10A resistive loads, which is more than sufficient for most 120V AC heating applications. Ensure the inrush and steady-state current of your heater does not exceed 10A. Wire the thermostat in series with the heating element's live wire to provide over-temperature cut-off or basic on/off control.

How do I mount and wire the KSD301 thermostat?

Mount the thermostat using its mounting holes, ensuring good thermal contact with the surface or component you wish to monitor. Electrically, it is a two-terminal device. Connect one terminal to your load (e.g., heater, fan, alarm) and the other terminal to the power source. Since it is normally open, the circuit will only be completed when the local temperature reaches 70°C.
