Description

The KSD302 is a bimetallic disc thermostat designed for precise thermal protection and control. The internal bimetallic element deflects at its calibrated setpoint, mechanically snapping the contacts open (in this NC configuration) to break the circuit. This provides a failsafe, power-off state in the event of an over-temperature condition.

Housed in a robust ceramic body, the switch offers excellent electrical isolation and withstands high ambient temperatures. Its SPST, normally closed configuration makes it ideal for series connection in heater circuits, motors, transformers, and power supplies where automatic cut-off is required upon exceeding a safe operating temperature.

Key Features

  • Fixed Calibration: Pre-set to trip at 140°C with a typical tolerance of ±3-5°C.
  • High-Current Capacity: Handles up to 16A resistive load at 250V AC, enabling direct control without relays.
  • Ceramic Construction: Provides superior electrical insulation, arc resistance, and long-term thermal stability.
  • Mechanical Snap-Action: Ensures quick, positive contact opening and closing, minimizing arcing and contact wear.
  • Normally Closed Operation: Circuit is closed under normal conditions and opens upon reaching trip temperature for safety.
  • Compact & Mountable: Designed for easy installation with bracket or direct mounting via its housing.

Applications

  • Over-temperature protection in electric water heaters, kettles, and coffee makers.
  • Thermal cut-off safety for motors, transformers, and power supplies in industrial equipment.
  • Temperature regulation in soldering irons, heat guns, and other heating appliances.
  • Safety interlock in lighting fixtures, ballasts, and ventilation systems.
  • General-purpose thermal switching in automotive, appliance, and DIY electronics projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Normally Closed (NC) mean for this thermostat?

Normally Closed means the electrical contacts inside the switch are closed, allowing current to flow, at temperatures below its setpoint (140°C). When the sensed temperature rises to or above 140°C, the internal bimetallic disc snaps and mechanically opens the contacts, breaking the circuit. This design provides automatic power cut-off in an over-temperature condition.

Can this KSD302 switch control a 16A heater directly?

Yes, the switch is rated for 16A at 250V AC, which is suitable for directly switching resistive loads like heating elements within that rating. Ensure your load (e.g., heater) does not exceed 16A. For inductive loads like motors, derating or using an intermediate relay is often recommended to handle inrush currents.

How is the thermostat mounted and connected?

The ceramic housing typically has mounting holes or a bracket for secure installation near the heat source. Electrically, it is wired in series with the load (e.g., heater) and the power supply. The two terminal screws connect the live wire through the switch, so that when it opens at 140°C, it interrupts power to the load.

Is the 140°C setpoint adjustable or fixed?

The setpoint is fixed at 140°C and is not user-adjustable. It is factory-calibrated via the specific bimetallic disc inside. The trip tolerance is typically ±3-5°C. For a different trip temperature, you would need a different model (e.g., KSD301 for 120°C, KSD303 for 150°C).
