Description

The APDS-9960 sensor is a sophisticated optical module that combines multiple sensing functions. It employs four separate photodiodes arranged to detect directional infrared reflections, enabling complex gesture recognition such as up, down, left, and right swipes. The integrated UV and IR blocking filters ensure precise ambient light and RGB color sensing, making it suitable for operation behind dark glass.

Designed for 3.3V operation, the module includes a programmable driver for the IR LED current and features ambient light rejection and offset compensation algorithms. This ensures stable proximity and gesture readings even in varying lighting conditions. The breakout provides easy access to all necessary pins, including VCC, GND, SDA, SCL, INT, and VL for optional IR LED power.

Key Features

  • Multi-Function Optical Sensor: Combines ambient light sensing, RGB color sensing, proximity detection, and gesture recognition in one compact package.
  • Advanced Gesture Engine: Features four directional diodes, a 32-step dataset FIFO, and interrupt-driven communication for reliable, real-time gesture detection.
  • High-Sensitivity Light Sensing: Includes UV/IR blocking filters and programmable gain/integration time for accurate light measurement behind dark glass.
  • Optimized Proximity Sensing: Provides trimmed, consistent readings with ambient light rejection and a programmable IR LED driver for adjustable range.
  • Developer-Friendly Interface: Breakout board includes pre-soldered headers (or header set provided) for easy integration with breadboards and prototype systems.
  • Robust Signal Conditioning: Built-in offset compensation and saturation indicators ensure reliable data across the operating temperature range of -25°C to 85°C.

Applications

  • Touchless gesture control interfaces for robots, media centers, and smart appliances.
  • Automatic display brightness adjustment based on ambient light conditions in consumer electronics.
  • Proximity-based activation or deactivation of touchscreens and mechanical switches in handheld devices.
  • RGB color detection and analysis for color-matching or sorting systems in light industrial settings.
  • Interactive art installations and educational projects requiring simple, non-contact user input.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage of the APDS9960 module, and can I use it with 5V Arduino boards?

The APDS9960 module operates strictly at 3.3V. Connecting it directly to a 5V logic system can damage the sensor. For use with 5V Arduinos (like Uno), you must use a logic level converter on the I2C lines (SDA, SCL) and ensure the VCC pin is supplied with 3.3V from the Arduino's 3.3V pin or a regulated 3.3V source.

How do I change the I2C address of the APDS9960 sensor?

The APDS9960 sensor has a fixed I2C address of 0x39, which cannot be changed via hardware or software. If you need to connect multiple sensors to the same I2C bus, you must use an I2C multiplexer (like the TCA9548A) to manage communication with each sensor independently on separate channels.

What is the purpose of the VL pin on the breakout board?

The VL pin provides optional power to the onboard infrared (IR) LED. You can connect it to a separate power source (up to the LED's maximum rating) to increase the IR LED's current, which can extend the effective range for proximity and gesture detection. If left unconnected, the IR LED is powered from the module's main VCC (3.3V).

How accurate is the gesture detection, and what gestures can it recognize?

The sensor is designed to recognize simple directional gestures: up, down, left, and right swipes within a range of 10-20 cm. Accuracy depends on consistent, deliberate hand motion and can be tuned in software via sensitivity settings and integration time. It is not intended for complex or multi-finger gesture recognition.
