Description

The Grove Sunlight Sensor integrates the SiLabs SI1145, a low-power reflectance-based sensor with a digital I2C interface. It provides calibrated readings for ultraviolet (UV) index, ambient visible light intensity (lux), and infrared (IR) light levels, making it suitable for environmental monitoring applications where spectral light analysis is required. The sensor’s programmable-event interrupt output allows for efficient, event-driven system design.

Housed on a compact Grove-compatible PCB, the module is designed for rapid prototyping and system integration. Its performance is stable across a wide dynamic range of light sources, including direct sunlight, ensuring reliable data for weather stations, smart agriculture systems, and UV exposure monitoring projects.

Key Features

  • Multi-spectral light sensing: UV index, ambient visible light, and infrared detection.
  • Digital I2C interface (7-bit address) simplifies communication and wiring.
  • Onboard Grove connector ensures compatibility with the extensive Grove ecosystem.
  • Programmable interrupt pin (INT) for efficient, low-power event-triggered operation.
  • Wide operating voltage range (3.0V to 5.5V) supports 3.3V and 5V logic systems.
  • Optimized low-current design, drawing only 3.5mA during operation.
  • Compact form factor designed for embedded and portable applications.

Applications

  • UV index monitoring for personal weather stations and environmental sensing nodes.
  • Smart agriculture and irrigation systems using visible light intensity for plant health assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for the Grove Sunlight Sensor?

The Grove Sunlight Sensor operates from 3.0V to 5.5V DC, making it directly compatible with both 3.3V logic systems (like Raspberry Pi or ESP32) and standard 5V Arduino boards without requiring a logic level shifter.

What communication protocol does this sensor use and how do I connect it?

This sensor uses the I2C protocol via a standard 4-pin Grove connector (VCC, GND, SDA, SCL). You can connect it directly to any microcontroller with a Grove I2C port or use Jumper wires to connect the breakout pins to your board's I2C pins.

Can this sensor measure direct sunlight, and what does it actually detect?

Yes, the SI1145 IC is designed for excellent performance under a wide dynamic range, including direct sunlight. It provides three distinct measurements: Ultraviolet (UV) Index, ambient visible light intensity (in lux), and infrared (IR) light levels across a 280nm to 950nm spectrum.
