VL6180X 3.3V/5V Ranging and Ambient Light Sensor Board Black
The VL6180X sensor board is a Time-of-Flight (ToF) proximity and ambient light sensing module integrating an 850nm IR VCSEL emitter. It provides precise short-range distance measurements up to 100mm and ambient light sensing via a standard I2C interface, making it compatible with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, STM32, and other 3.3V/5V microcontroller platforms.
Features
- Integrated Time-of-Flight (ToF) proximity and ambient light sensor (ALS).
- 850nm infrared VCSEL laser emitter for target-independent ranging.
- Short-range distance measurement from 0 to 100mm.
- I2C communication interface with 7-bit address 0x29 (up to 400kHz).
- Wide 2.7V to 5.5V operating voltage range for 3.3V/5V logic compatibility.

The VL6180X module utilizes STMicroelectronics’ patented Time-of-Flight technology to measure the time for emitted infrared light to reflect off a target and return. This principle allows for accurate distance measurement largely independent of the target’s color and reflectivity, unlike traditional IR reflectance sensors. The module combines proximity sensing and ambient light sensing (ALS) in a single compact package.
Designed for easy integration, the board includes an I2C interface for communication and programmable GPIO pins for interrupt-driven operation. Its wide operating voltage range ensures compatibility with both 3.3V and 5V logic systems commonly found in development boards and embedded designs, from hobbyist projects to professional IoT and automation applications.
